New Card old Rig. 6850 or 6770

Thread Starter
Ok I've been wondering about this for a while now, as of now I am on my sig rig and I've been looking at new components for a new build and I was trying to decide if I wanted to buy my new mobo, cpu and ram first before my next video card but as money is still pretty tight for me especially during the holiday season I've decided my x-mas gift to me this year is going to be bf3 and a new video card.

Now I myself have been pretty happy with this 5670 I have it truly is a good bang for the buck card although there are select few things that it crawls with.

Borderlands and its terrible shadows: I really don't know why either since its based on the unreal 3 engine(correct me if I'm wrong) which I've never had a problem with them before on a unreal 3 engine game, its not too bad its just in some areas of the game I have to turn them off completely especially in the Knoxx DLC. Also running AA is pointless because it puts me at about 25-30 fps in some areas which i personally cant handle. I've found I get decent frames with Morphological Antialiasing My only complaint with that is the blurred images on the HUD or other various text ingame.

BC2(still dont have bf3 right so this is a good comparison)

Now I understand my cpu itself could be causing my issues with not being able to max this game out but you might be surprised at this little misnamed intel processor, but I may be wrong and not even need a new card for BC2 just a better cpu.

I run it at all settings high except for a few and no aa and my assumption is BF3 will be more demanding so i figured maybe just a better card and then wait till i get my money from taxes.

Now don't just tell me to get another cpu and mobo before hand because for one it is the holiday season so I've spent a lot of money on others and this is my left over spend on myself cash so that isn't happening.

SO EVERYONE

Would it be a good idea to get either a 6770 or a 6850

If so which one or would i see a difference from a 5670 to the 6770 or would i be severely bottlenecked if I get a 6850.

Again as always OCN thank you guys for your time and consideration on this.thumb.gif

Get a 5770. They are exactly the same as the 6770s but they can do quadfire and will be much cheaper.

I would just get the 6850, it would be a massive upgrade from the 5670. You will be bottlenecked by your CPU, but it will still be a big upgrade and you can just get another CPU once you get more cash.

I wouldn't get the 6770 unless you get it a lot cheaper, the 6770 is a rebranded 5770.

See that was one thing I was wondering I still felt like the 6850 would be a good upgrade and I felt like the 6770 wasn't quite enough of a card to warrant it being roughly $10 cheaper than a 6850

How bad would the bottleneck be you think?

Bottleneck or not, get the 6850/70 to see a diffrence of the upgrade. Getting a lower end card such as 5770/6770 will not get rid of the bottleneck regardless.

Those games you play will see the benifits of a 6850/70. If your resolution is 1920x1080/1200, go for 2x 6850/70 in crossfire, otherwise a single 6950 will do fine.

was very very happy with my 6850 and ever more-so when overclocking. i must warn you though that the coolers on them suck (at least the xfx ones)

It won't be too bad, it really depends on what games you play. Here's an old article comparing different CPUs with different GPUs.:
http://www.tomshardware.com/reviews/build-balanced-platform,2469-8.html

With your e6300 and the 6850, you should get at least double FPS compared to the 5670.

I came from HD5670 and going to HD6850 was a massive upgrade.
I haven't encountered a game yet that I cant play at ultra.
I dont have BF3 but crysis 2 runs great.

Your e6300 is similar to the performance of a dual core Athlon II X2 250 so expect a bottleneck even with just a 6770.
but you can still benefit from the gpu upgrade on games that run fine on dualcores.
You can always upgrade to a Q9550 later down the road.

If the price difference is only 10$ between 6770 and 6850 then getting a 6850 is a clear winner. Now if the price difference between the cards would be larger then there might be some points worth considering. I.e., debating if it's good idea to get 6770, 6790 or 6850.

6770 is btw pretty good card it would just need to be ~30$ or more below the price of 6850 for it to be "worth it" from the standpoint of bang for buck in my opinion.
