Performance is highly dependent on how GPU intensive a game is. The GPU intensive games have the 69XX series well ahead, whilst the less GPU intensive games have the 5870 in btwn the 6950 and 6970. Though since they're all above 60fps anyway, it doesn't really matter.
However, given the price difference, the 5870 is a good buy. The only exception would be if you need to run eyefinity in which case the 5870 simply doesn't have the VRAM.

The 5870 and 6950 trade blows in most games, and the 6970 is far and away the better card of those 3.

But it's ridiculously hard to beat the price/performance of 2x5870s in CF, especially if it's going to cost $140ea./less than $300 for a CF setup....

The 5870 has 1600 shaders vs 1120. The 6870 is designed to increase efficiency of shader use.
Theoretical compute performance of the 5870 is significantly higher. But requires higher ILP, which you just don't see in games (but you will see in Furmark)

This. 5870's in the 2GB variant tend to keep up with 6950's more.

How is it known that when they benched the 7970, they rebenched all of those cards? I always assumed that they just kept old data...
