Mixing RAM types? Also: Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz?

Hey.
I got a pair of G.Skill PI's atm from the US. I live in Norway and they're not for sale here, so if I want 8 gb of RAM instead of 4 I would have to mix brands and fill up all my memory slots which I've heard is bad for overclocking. This leads me to the other question, is the 2x4 gb set of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 1600MHz good? It's quite cheap, even with Norwegian prices, and I have a Corsair H70 so the height isn't any problem as the CPU cooler won't get blocked.

how much for the 2x4GB I have the 4X4 GB kit and love it.

The ram is pretty tall. Just be 100% your cooler will fit. I have the thermaltake frio and can only use one fan on it or it blocks two ram slots.

I definitely recommend the Corsair Vengeance 1600MHz!

Depends on the memory you're mixing (timings, voltages, clocks etc) and more importantly the board itself - which can be a real crapshoot - eg, why matched pairs are always recommended.
Secondly yes, it will be more stress on your integrated memory controller - you'll likely have to up your voltages for the IMC to keep your clocks stable.

Picking up a 2x4GB kit would be better, the kit you mentioned would be just fine smile.gif

Alright, thanks guys. Also, what does the memory timings affect again? Same with memory speed in general, I used to know, but at the moment I just can't remember what tighter timings helped for. It was also something with AMD having more use of tighter timings or something. Would check up myself, but I'm at the phone at the moment.

Thanks for answering, +rep wink.gif

as for ram timings, this thread can explain it better than i can in more depth

^ Yep good reference.

It's not as important with your build because the memory controller is integrated on the CPU itself, so it inherently reduces latency (long and short is frequency>timings for your setup lol) smile.gif

I'd have to agree that the Vengeance is quality RAM. Not nearly as tight timings as I would like (my 4gb Dominator kit was 7-8-7-20, and is now gracing my PhII/5770 backup rig) but it's not like you can see an actual difference real-world. Definitely would recommend.

Yeah, but I've yet to see real world examples where even extremely high frequencies provide benefits. If you're a benchmarker, sure, but a gamer, no.
