What happens when technology advances beyond that? Will it scale the 5.9's of today down to 5.2 or something?

Nope... The score is a barometer of sorts to tell you how well your computer will run vista. Thats it. If computer systems surpass the requirements by far then Vista will just run great. But since vista needs such so much power, I think they threw that tool in there to kinda of show you were you may be lacking in power if Vista doesnt perform like you hoped it would.

Hmm so in a years time there wont be anything but 5.9s? But you can click the "software for my rating" thing to find games and such, what if more powerful games come out?

They'll have to revise it eventually I think.

They certainly may but I doubt it is more than a glimmer in microsofts eye at the moment since the ratings are very strenuous for the current generation of hardware. You have to have the latest and greatest right now to get the highest scores which are made up of a small percentage of the actual market of pc users out there. Think of all the grannys, moms and pops that will buy a computer even today. They will not be buying systems that are likely to have an index score of higher than maybe 4.0 - 4.5 or maybe less. Microsoft claims you only need an index score of 3.0 or better to efficiently run Vista. This is only through the perception of the user of course because us overclockers wont accept anything less than the fastest baddest systems we can afford.

Overall should be 5.8 for you.

It always uses the lowest score as the final score
