Upgrading Gateway NV55C Notebook Graphics Card?

I was recently given a Gateway NV55C49u notebook as a gift.

It runs extremely well, except the "Intel HD Graphics," the weak link. a Intel controlled, shared-memory card. It doesn't cut it for the applications and games I wish to run on it.

I have worked as a PC tech for a few years, and am no stranger to soldering electronics. I know laptop hardware is usually not upgradeable, at least, not for the faint of heart.

I wished to pick the brains of people who attempt such mods, and see if such an upgrade would be possible on this laptop design? Could I solder in a better graphics card, or is this not possible with a shared-memory platform?

Is there further information I need to acquire before we can determine if such a mod is do-able?

Or, a more simple question, does anyone have experience with doing something like this to a notebook?

I'm perfectly comfortable with opening it up and poking around.

the issue with modding things like laptops/mobile GPU's.. is the power delivery is very weak.. and will likely blow under the strain of additional voltage. You can squeeze a little out with a small mod... but we may be talking 20-50mhz in speed, as with that the additional heat may make stability hard to "find".

*its a fine balance between power delivery and cooling ability... laptops and mobile GPU's are very weak on both.. so its generally not a good idea.

OK, that makes sense - I was wondering if those would be issues too.

Thanks for the reply. A new system will be better than destroying what I have now smile.gif
