Help! P5N32SLI SE Dlx or Asus P5WDH Dlx WE

Thread Starter
Hi guys,

I just got a new system but I guess I should have read more on this site a bit sooner Turns out that it's very difficult to overclock the motherboard I have (ASUS P5N32 SLI SE Deluxe) - even a modest increase using the built-in and "safe" ASUS overclock settings in the BIOS causes instability it seems (from reading some articles it looks like it's not just me but I'd be interested in hearing if anybody else has had better luck).

So - since the guys I bought this from offer free changes to the system (they'll just either charge me more or pay me the difference depending on the hardware I change), I was thinking about going with the Asus P5WDH Deluxe Wireless Edition since almost everybody with good results on this page (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1075792) seems to have that one and that's a motherboard the guys have in stock. What do you think - good idea (btw, listing more details about my system's cooling at the end).

Also, since that motherboard doesn't support SLI (at least not officially) I was thinking about going with an ATI card instead of the nVidia 7900 GT so at least I have the option of going crossfire later. The guys I'm buying from have the ATI X1900XT 512MB PCI-Express but they charge almost $420 for it, which is too much considering what the new ATI cards sell for in retail. I could get them to order a different card (will take some extra days) but not sure if I should go with the x1900 XTX or x1950 XTX instead (or something different alltogether like a cheaper crossfire solution)?

In order to keep the cost a bit down I'm thinking about changing the my Raptor 10000RPM (150G) drive which was quite expensive with another 7200 400G Seagate drive identical to my 2nd drive so that I can run RAID0. If I understand it correctly I shouldn't see too much of a performance difference between the fast Raptor and a 7200 RAID0 configuration (the slower drive also seems less noisy than the Raptor which really can make some sounds).

Any advice would be greatly appreciated (got some really good advice here before).

I picked up the Asus P5W DH Deluxe and an E6700 last week (as well as new ram). I went this route for similar reasons. SDumper(P5W Deluxe) and Turn & Burn (ASUS P5WD2-E Pre 975x) both have SLI running on intel chipsets with stable results (Sdumper running a conroe and Turn & Burn running a D960). They are both using modded Nvidia drivers with SLI with the board. It's also rumoured that official SLI supported drivers will be out eventually for Intel boards (Even more so I would think since the ATI-AMD merger). Considering I have a pair of 7900GTX, I was very thorough in doing my homework prior to the purchase.

SLI should work fine on that board and as you are likely aware, it is a monster overclocker.

I have two computers...a gaming rig and a folding rig. The gamer is what you see in my sig. And yeah, OCing this mobo is difficult and limited due to the NV4 chipset.

The folding rig, however, is a P5B deluxe (965 shipset) and it screams. If you are using only a single video card, then I recommend the P5B deluxe highly. But, then again, what are you doing with it? If it's for games, the P5B is overkill.

The P5B Deluxe isn't a good choice for SLI or Crossfire though as its second PCI-E slot is only a 4x/2x whereas the P5W DH Deluxe is a 975x chipset with 8x8x PCI-E slots.

Of course...I'm sorry, I thought he was going to use a single video card.... The P5B is DEFINITELY not for you if you want to run two physical cards.

I've heard many good things about the DS3. It uses the Intel Chipset and overclocks nicely, especially with C2Ds. It only has one PCI-E slot though, something which is fixed in the DS4, which is available for about £10-20 more.

The Gigabyte DS4 does have 2 PCI-E slots but the second is only 4x.

Thanks, guys. Sounds like it makes sense to change the mob for a P5WDH Dlx WE (the other suggested mobs aren't available where I'm getting my system and I don't want to wait longer than absolutely necessary).

About the videocard: I play Oblivion a lot and once thing that I didn't realize earlier is that ATI cards allow you to both have HDR lightning AND anti-aliasing turned on at the same time, which the nVidia cards don't. I haven't played Oblivion with an ATI card so I don't know how noticeable it is but it sounds like one reason to go with the ATI solution right (I don't have too much experience with this so the SLI trick with the Crossfire mob sounds a bit complicated to me... hehe). Also, I read that nVidia doesen't have an HDMI capable card (I believe the latest ATI cards are HDMI capable). Not sure if this is important or not - I don't have Blu-Ray and probably won't be using my computer for movie watching anyway. Thoughts on that?

Do you guys have an ATI card that you recommend? Is the x1950 xtx worth it or is there a cheaper card that I can overclock to perform up to stock x1950 xtx?

The x1900xt is the way to go with overclocking. To your point, the SLI modding for the Asus board is simply using a set of altered drivers and is quite simple but your other points regarding the ATI card are valid. Don't let SLI or Crossfire be the reason to switch as SLI is still a more mature and stable platform with ATI catching up quickly. the ATI cards do hold a slight edge in some benches (and to your above point as well).

Is it just me or is the naming of the ATI cards confusing? The card the guys I'm buyin from have in stock is the ATI X1900XT 512MB PCI-Express but the ATI website doesn't seem to list the difference between the 1900 XT and XTX. Also, apart from the DDR4 memory, is there any other difference between the 1950 XTX and the 1900 (again, ATI's website isn't very clear).

Finally, I read somewhere that "older" 1900 XT 512MB cards might not be HDMI capable whereas newer 1900 XT 256MB cards are (why is ATI coming out with a card with same name but less memory???). I might be reading misleading articles but would be nice to hear from someone who has found their way through the ATI jungle (at least nVidia's website does a better job of distingushing btw their cards).
