exactly....in the home server world it appear that the HP sas expander that you linked to and the Intel RES2SV240 are they way to go in expanding past the capacity of your raid card. both cards have thier ups and downs as well as compatability issues.

Controller looks good. just be reminded that it is an 8 port intenal only so if you plan to go beyond 8 disc one slot would need to go to your expander (if you plan to go that route)

Running in raid 6...

Can't really say anything about the controller card since I've never used Adaptec brand before (only used 3ware/LSI/Areca). I did buy 4 x Seagate Barracuda ST3000DM001 recently for my backup server (in RAID 5). 1 drive failed a day out of the box with bad sectors and failure to boot. Good thing Newegg’s RMA process is great. It’s been a week now since the replacement drive came in and the RAID array seems to be in good shape. I'm still skeptical on the quality of these drives.

Just the 6 internal for now...so leave 2 for expansion later
