AMD vs NVIDIA - drivers?

Thread Starter
Hi guys, one of my friends is going to get a new card in the future. He is pretty much decided on a nvidia card due to the drivers. He says that the drivers on the nvidia platform are much better than AMD's.

What do you guys think? Are Nvidias drivers better than AMDs?

IMO yes. I don't have a amd card (not tried one), but I've got a few friends that have a radeon card and they say drivers are trash. One of them has a 6950 and it he said it was completely useless. It worked, but he got lots of display drivers stopped responding errors. He switched to a GTX 560 Ti and says everything is perfect.

People always said that nvdia drivers are better than amd, but not so much anymore....I personally haven't had any issues with the 4870 and 6950

I've always owned cards by both camps (and currently still do) and I've never had driver problems with either. Buy the better card for whatever price point you're looking at and forget about who makes it.

If using Windows I don't think either camp really has better drivers. AMD has some driver issues when Rage was released but issues such as those get fixed quickly. I do feel that NVIDIA has better Linux support (i.e. there were no AMD drivers available with the release of Fedora 16 due to AMD being slow to release a compatible driver with the latest Linux Kernel).

From experience amd's crossfire driver support is poor with some games, but never had any probs running a single 6950/6970.But recently due to amd's driver support have switched to nvid with a single gtx580 and so far have been more than pleased.

I'm ditching this 6990 and getting the top of the line nVidia card (probably in SLI) when it comes out next year...Mostly due to drivers. Crossfire support is not very good with AMD. I'd imagine AMD single card setups are better but it is not a viable solution with me because of Eyefinity
post #8 of 13
It really depends on the user.
It doesnt matter what card you choose if you dont know how to use it properly.

Ive never ever had problems with drivers on both nvidia and ati within the past 10 years.

Oddly enough, that's what I'm getting right now with my 560 Ti; never had that happen with my HD4870.

In short, the generalization of poor drivers is the most stupid reason to pick NVIDIA over AMD. Just pick the card that you're getting the best deal for.

Just got the 6970, and the drivers are fine. No problems with them not responding other than me OC'ing too far.
