Yep. A good pair of headphones can be had for a fraction of the price of a pair of speakers that can match it. I am speaking more from a home audip pespective than a computer audio one, but the general idea is the same. For the budget audiophile, good cans are the way to go. (Unless you happen to be lucky and can score some vintage towers. Then it's time to break into the headphone piggy bank and buy a nice amp.)

I second that. I listen to all my music with a pair of Senn HD 650's via a dedicated tube amp and high-quality CD player source (dual DAC). To match this sound with a set of speakers would cost a silly amount. I'm thinking of switching to a headphone setup for gaming also, just for this reason. I dont know which card to get (about to start a thread on that exact topic)...

for gaming you want an X-fi with CMOS 3D.

Yeah - I'm looking at the X-fi, but cant decide on which one to get. Many people say to just get the xtrememusic, but I really like the idea of having front hp access (eg platinum or elite pro). The other alternative is the Audigy 4 pro which is currently at a crazy $119 at newegg. The audigy 4 has a breakout box and the same high quality DAC as the X-fi elite pro (which costs $279). The Audigy-4 also has the CMOS 3D effect, but its the older architecture so I'm afraid of Vista support/compatability going forward. Whichever card I get, I will want to transfer it to my DX10 build next year.

get the Xtreme music. dude they are stupid awesome. Pluz i had the audigy 4 before this card and i'm telling u right now that i noticed a HUGE difference in BF2 because that game is specially coded to take advantage for the x-fi architecture. Now i can tell how far my enemys are i can hear heli's miles away. It's well worth the upgrade. trust me
