get a good pair of cans and then get a desktop or clip on mic. there is no need to get a headset.

highly annoyed, you'll have to let me know how that amp works out for ya.

Sennheiser's Headsets have good sound (see tomshardware.com), but don't forget that they're Headset not headphone ! Headphones has better SQ than Headsets. @Burn-in/Break-in: you should do them for better SQ ! It's very serious. For example i can't campare the SQ of my 595s before burn-in and after burn-in ! Good volume, Bass, FM/AM noise, +50 Hours, with a SB sound card or good AMP ! See this burn-in topic from head-fi.org: http://www6.head-fi.org/forums/showthread.php?t=58157

Here is something ironic in the latest issue of maximum pc mag they actually discussed the sennheiser HD555 headphones + a $30 radio shack lapel mic vs. a Plantronics Audio 550 DSP headset.

kinda hard to see, but it looks like they've agreed with what I've been saying for some time. You'll get better SQ, better performance and more comfort with quality headphones and a separate mic

So what pair of headphones and what mic would you recommend I get besides the pc150 headset. Also, try to keep it below $40

I have a pair of 595s and I also have an op-amp-based Class A amplifier for them. I have to tell you, when plugged into my iPod the difference is night and day between the headphones directly connected to the ipod and then with an amp in them. The issue comes to the fact that a good deal of hi-end headphones (including the 595s) have a high impedence. The ipod simply cannot output enough power to effectively drive the headphones. Thus, volume and bass are effected.

However, adding the amp to the soundblaster does not REALLY add much of anything. Though some people swear by it, I dont think its necessary to add an amp between your nice headphones and your sound card.

To figure out where your particular headphones lie, just good "XXX headphone impedence". I think the original 595s had 120ohm and the newer generation (whatever that means) are now only 59ohms (still a good deal).

Its something to keep in mind. Audiophiles will tell you the biggest BS. Things like "I can hear the capacitors distort in my headphone amp" or "I can hear above 30kHz". Its kinda ridiculous, and you will end up spending boatloads of money to negligable results (a car passing by your house would probably offer more noise through the closed window than the distortion noise of generic capacitors at high volumes).

Bottom line, Sennheiser makes great headphones. Pre-amps are nice but not necessary, especially with desktop use and a decent soundcard. Just get what you can afford, you will enjoy anything you get that you thoroughly research and understand.

non, maybe the audio 90s from plantronics? or the siberia headphones, i disagree with having the mic be seperate, all gamers if u pay good attention have headphones with mic in them.

Speakers don't work for alot of gamers becase you can't hear alot of things that you can hear with headphones

phantom grave listen any mic will do, let me give u an example. I use these headphones for my music and sometimes for gaming
http://ec1.images-amazon.com/images/...056672174_.jpg

Here is my findings. Since they are not cans for gaming i just plug them into the jack in my x-fi. The sound is decent when i play bf2 i do hear the chopper before anyone else does. lol. I use those cans and some chepo logitech mic as my mic. The sound is amazing on the other end as my squad mates tell me. It doesn't really matter what mic u use at all. As long as u don't have a raspy voice. My friend has that and it's very hard to understand then u get an expensive mic otherwise no way.

and can someone plz tell me what in the world will an amp do for a set of cans. So let me get this straight ur home watching a DVD and u plug one end into ur pc and then take the mic and plug it into the amp and what will happen. and y can't an ipod power HD555? Will an ipod be able to power my px200's that i'm getting WOOT!!!

the new hd595's are 50Ohm not 59Ohm.

the px200's are 32ohm if I remember correctly and they are pretty sensitive. an ipod will have no problems driving them.

Amps are necessary for some cans, other cans they aren't exactly necessary, but they benefit from being amped. other cans there is little/no difference (mostly because they aren't good headphones)
