CNC Generals Zero Hour "serious error" problem

Thread Starter
I've been trying to get CNCG Zero hour to work on my rig, currently running Win7 Home premium64bit.

I keep getting the following error:
Quote:
You have encountered a serious error. Serious errors can be caused by many things inculding viruses, overheated hardware and hardware that does not meet the minimum specifications for the game. Please visit the forums at www.generals.ea.com for suggested courses of action or consult your manual for technical support contact information

I ran the system spec scanner, from the "Support" folder, and it meets all the requirements, except that it was showing that there was no memory available.

Tried increasing virtual memory, but still didn't work.

Anyone happen to know how to fix this error?

It's very common for the game to give such messages. It constantly happened to me on many different setups and OSes. The only remedy really is the 1.04v Patch which simply decreases the frequency of these crashes.

If I remember correctly I had a very, very strange problem with this game many years ago. It is so long ago that I wonder If I was using a Athlon64 system or something...

Anyway, I remember I could not get the game to start.. Can't remember if it gave me any error code or if it was just a black screen..

I tried almost everything...

Here is the kicker, my system was overclocked, tested stable and everything... But as a last resort I downclocked my CPU to stock, and the game fired right up! If I remember, I read on the internet other people having this strange problem with starting up this particular game when overclocked (even if stable)...

My theory is there must have been som kinda strange thing in this games coding, detecting the CPU was not running at it's stock frequency, and just bugging out or something...

Very strange...

I would give this a shot if I where you thumb.gif

It has nothing to do with your system. Anyone who says that has no actual experience with the game.

The problem is a memory leak which was never fixed.

There is a solution, but involves playing with only 2 of 3 factions, which is super lame. For whatever reason, crash will not happen with only 2 factions, even if its 4 vs 4.

Even with 8 gb of ram or more, crash will still happen, probably because x86 program can only use 2 gb of ram.

Either way you are screwed, trust me there is no fix, I searched long and hard since generals is like my favorite RTS ever and zero hour was a great, but a little unbalanced expansion pack.

Cool thing about generals, even though this is not related to crash is ability to run in any resolution and proper widescreen mode, and the ability to zoom out as far as you want. Check out WSGF generals section for how to do so. Here is a screenshot

I just tried removing 1 stick of ram, which put it down to 2gb on the rig, and its now showing 2047mb on the spec scanner instead of zero, but its still showing the serious error message.

Funny thing is, that the game is working on a lowend altec lansing laptop, with the very same OS as my rig.

Even tried running on compatibility mode, XP SP3 and "run as admin", still no luck.

There is no fix bro, and if you find it, you will be the first.

You can dig up the old threads on EA forums, you will find out what I told you. Dont bother trying to find magic bullet for zero hour, there is none. ALso, I doubt your old computer "worked fine" with Zero Hour.

I read through every single thread on the topic and spents DAYS trying to solve it years ago.

What happened is westwood was bought out by EA around same time Zero Hour shipped, meaning no incentive to fix the game, and probably the memory leak was really hard to figure out, so they just gave up.

If you play only USA factions vs China facitons, game is fine

GLA vs USA fine

GLA vs China fine

but dont use all 3, otherwise you get the crash. Im not the one who figured this out, someone else did years ago. Game is very old nowadays, and finding information on it will be hard.

Could it be possible that C&C GeneralsZH is not compatible with newer hardware like DDR3 rams?

There are some people that have made GeneralsZH work with Win7 64bit, and where for some it doesn't work.

My rig has DDR3, and the game always fails to start, my laptop on the other hand, has DDR2 rams, and works w/o problems.

Any thoughts?

I'd try it with my AM2+ MBoard, but i kept getting an error, "USB Over Current Status Detected" and always shuts down after 15secs.

EDIT: Small clarification to the crash, the game doesn't start up. When i double click the exe file, the pic shows up, followed by the "Serious Error" message.

Had an epiphany... is it crashing at startup or in game? Also, you're using Win 7 x64 right, and it works on XP? I've been through this before...
