How to test Corsair CX600 ?

Hi everyone,
I asked "santa" to get me a Corsair CX600 Psu, a cooler master elite 310 and a new graphics card, I dont remeber what model it was. After my mom order the psu I read the reviews on Amazon.com and there were about 30 good reviews and about 5 bad ones saying they got a DOA. The review are the same for the CX430, CX500, and CX600 cause they are sold on the same page. It did not say weather it was V2 or not. To test the psu to make shure its not doa I was thing I could connect a few fans and a dvd drive (some psu's trip on small loads) and bridge the green wire going to the mobo connector with one of the black wire on the connector with a paper clip . One person complained about the 3.3V rail that powers the processor being 2.2V. What would happen if mine had this problem and I didnt notice it would It kill my processor. How can I make shure mine is not one of the few doa and going to kill my mobo. I am going to be moving my old rig with the new psu and graphics card into the cooler master case.

It should be very rare for a reasonably decent power supply (like the CX) to arrive in a state where it can power on but put out dangerous voltages. More likely it works, or if it doesn't, it just doesn't power on at all and thus doesn't harm your stuff.

Whoever is talking about 3.3V powering the processor is very mistaken though. The CPU is powered from the voltage regulator modules on the motherboard, which draw power from +12V and do DC-DC conversion down to the range of about 0.8-1.6V for modern processors, depending on how modern it is and if it's working hard or not.

edit: well okay fine, if the guy's computer predates Pentium 4 / Athlon XP, then maybe the VRMs are powered from 3.3V. In any case, that doesn't apply to your computer (I hope).

Also the 3.3V reading of 2.2V is probably some type of erroneous reading, which is very common from software voltage readings.

You can check the DC outputs with a multimeter as a sanity check, but that's not going to be able to really catch potentially high AC ripple problems (for which there are none unless yours is somehow very defective out of the box). To check ripple, you'd need much more expensive gear.

I am running an athalon 2 X2(dualcore) 2.7GHZ 215, Ok I am just going to test it on a dvd drive and some fans then cause they all run 12V so if it is bad it will just kill the dvd drive and the fans. So it should be ok?

Dangerously high AC ripple isn't going to kill motors that quickly. Also, most chassis fans can start up and run just fine on much less than 12V, depending on the model, maybe down to 3V or so. They'd just run at a different speed, and many people send non-12V voltages intentionally to control speed. A bit above 12V wouldn't be a huge deal for them either. I think the optical drive motor shouldn't be too different.

So yeah you can do that, but a "positive" result still doesn't guarantee anything. And that tells you less than a $5 multimeter would anyway, which doesn't guarantee anything either. There's always some risk. From my perspective you're being unusually paranoid, which is understandable but not very productive considering how much (little) control you have over this situation.
