Want to upgrade to a 6 Series.

Thread Starter
Is it possible to upgrade my GPU to a 6 series card without any problems?
My rig is in my sig below.

I just want to play BF3 silky smooth.
At the moment, I can run it on 1680x1050 on high, with no AA, AF, but it looks like rubbish, and nothing like advertised, not even on par with PS3, and my rig is slighty more powerful than a PS3.

So quick question would be, is it possible to stick a 6 series card with my ancient 2007 rig?
Also, which card should I go for? I have a £150 budget.

I would recommend a 6870 for your budget. Here's a video of someone running Battlefield 3 with it at the same resolution as you.

Thanks for that, although that's BC2, and I can run that beautifully with my 4870.

Also, based on my case, would any 6870 be overly long, and not fit in my case?
One more thing, my PSU only has 2 6pin connectors, do all GPUs nowadays require a 6pin and 8pin?

Ok for one, before you even think about upgrading that 4890, I have some terrible news for you. That prehistoric dual core is bottlenecking that card severely.

With your budget it would be ideal to save up some more money and go with a bare bones 2500k build. 90% of games now are being developed for QUAD core.

And yes I've been there done that, check my Media Rig for example, It was my main rig for a while until I upgraded.

Upgrade your CPU then consider upgrading to a 6 series card.

Thanks for that extra piece of information, I will think twice now before ordering.

Does a barebones just mean a mobo, cpu, and ram?

Correct, it shouldn't cost you a fortune either, I would give you an estimate with a bare necessities build with what you would need to push any card 6 series and onward but since your in the EU (I presume?) It would be pointless because i know the prices are different for the US.

And yes I'm not trying to sound harsh, trust me save your money and just do an overhaul, your going to need it if you really want to play BF3 to it's full potential.
