Sandy Bridge E Overclocking Guide Walk through, Explanations, and Support for all X79 Overclockers - Page 30

It's a pity there's no entry-level cheap S2011 chip so that one can test these issues (I bought
a Pentium G860 so I could test S1155 boards), and sadly ASUS doesn't normally support
XEONs so a low-spec XEON probably isn't an option either (I bought a 2GHz E5503 for
testing X58 boards, at least those that support it).

Bummer that the timing is across a holiday weekend, as you say. I assume you've tried the
fully disconnected power and CMOS battery removal?

Might be worth removing the CPU, check to see if there are any burnt pads underneath, or
damaged pins. Reseat, reattach HS, etc. Do a full CMOS battery removal at the same time.

Ian.

Yep ive made an CMOS flashing with the Jumper and with Jumper + removed Battery. This was the last thing ive tried.

I now rebuild my "old" PC (Intel DX38BT + QX6850, GTX 480 and the same RAM). Just way better than my hp compaq nx9030. biggrin.gif

I will call Asus and the seller of the board for RMA on Monday. I hope that whichever component died, had not taken any other with it. Not sure if i should also RMA the 3970X too, and not only the board. Can i exchange it at all i mean i had it overclocked.

That is possible, but less common I suspect.

Hmm, I don't know. May be worth asking the seller what happens if you send back a part
that turns out to be ok, will they just return it to you? If so, and all they do is charge some
fee for their time & return shipping, then that's not so bad.

I guess it's up to you whether you tell them that or not, though quite frankly the speed you
were using barely counts as oc'd when it comes to 3970Xs IMO.

I would not say that i had overclocked it. And youre right the 200 Mhz ive taken is not an big deal.

Yup. Although technically an overclock, I wouldn't regard it as such; it's well within the limits of both components.

Sorry If this is against the thread rules but I have a really busy life and need advice asap so here it goes and please don't be harsh I am having a bad day tongue.gif

I am going to post some pics of my odd surprise I have found. I have been running my relaxed 4.5 GHz oc on my 3930k for a week now and I just noticed something odd. The core volt on my cpu is higher when its ide???? is that normal. I had a i7 920 before this and it never looked this way so any help is much appreciated.

any advice is much apprecieated and I know keeping the core volt in bios is against oc code of honor but I installed this 3930k and upped the multiplier and this is what I get lol

EDIT: I also wanted to know if it is typical for the 1st core to be 5c hotter than all other cores like mine. I have a tc14pe phanteks cooler wich is amazing 90% of the time considering it cost me 40$ on sale. I never go above 69c on any core except that first one, and I was running max heat in place large ffts (when I run blend test my cores hover around 65c mad.gif

Don't worry about that. biggrin.gif

> ... The core volt on my cpu is higher when its ide???? is that normal. ...

Could just be he result of the combination of settings you have, the VIDs, vdroop, etc., especially if you haven't changed
anything except the multiplier. There are so many other tweaks & suchlike can can or would normally do for oc'ing a 3930K.

> ... I know keeping the core volt in bios is against oc code of honor but I installed this 3930k and upped the multiplier and

If you mean you've left the vcore on Auto when you've changed the multiplier, well, all that really means is the system
might make the voltage higher than it needs to be, but it shouldn't do any harm - the system has various protection
mechanisms, etc. Long term though, it's best to do the process in a more refined and methodical way so that the final
configuration is optimised for best power consumption, minimum heat, etc., to give the best performance while maximising
the long term life of the components.

> EDIT: I also wanted to know if it is typical for the 1st core to be 5c hotter than all other cores like mine. ...

Yes, that can happen, it's normal. I talked to someone at Intel about this, such variability is perfectly acceptable, as long
as the chip behaves within defined specs. Ages ago I bought a new retail i3 550; it had wildly different core temps. Later
I bought a used 550 off eBay, it had core temps that were basically identical.

> I have a tc14pe phanteks cooler wich is amazing 90% of the time considering it cost me 40$ on sale. ...

That's a good cooler, I have the same. Best to fit it with three fans though! And make sure they're PWMs.

Also, consider installing a couple of small fans to help cool the chipset/VRM heatsinks (just use your finger
to see if they're hot when the system is under load).

Ian.

Thanks a lot for the reply Ian. It makes me feel better about my setup. I did take your advice on feeling the heat sinks around the CPU and they stay nice and cool. I did add a third fan to the tc14pe as it helped lower my i7 920 by 4c degrees. Thanks again and RePped +1 Ian.

Most welcome! 8)

Btw, there are some good guides on the ASUS ROG site about oc'ing these CPUs, including a piece about
how to use voltage offset mode for vcore.

Question about vcore, in the OP it says

"MOST IMPORTANTLY Vcore has be reduced to 1.4v as VAbsolute"

but then in the chart below it says max Vcore is 1.4.-1.45 on air

What is the max safe vcore for 24/7 assuming I can keep the temps in check
