Honestly, though - I wouldn't mind if the 'refresh' brought back elements from EverQuest and Anarchy Online - games that took a lot of skill and dedication to be good at, and to get into guilds that could actually raid the top-tier places. Everything is too instance based now, and I'd really like to see things come back to being zone-based, as in, the main bosses of an area are always accessible (via a key of some sort sometimes), so you can suicide run them just to see the boss. It was probably one of my favorite things to do in EQ, especially in Gates of Discord & Omens of War zones.
Taking 30 seconds to learn a spell, and taking nearly a full minute and a half (without high Meditation skill and AAs for instant spell memorization) to memorize your 8 spells - which was all you got - was one of the most frustrating yet amazing things about EQ, but now you have your entire book of spells open to you, with 839475893475 action bars and near-infinite space to carry items. It's just not the same. Crafting took a lot of effort, and a LOT of Platinum to skill up. The Bazaar was a place that was incredibly competitive for sales, and it took a lot more effort and time than the Auction House idea. You actually had to have a character STANDING there all night - meaning the market was rarely over-saturated because only a certain type of person even did that.

tl;dr I'd like to see a return to the old-style MMO, where it was hard.

I played EQ from launch right up to the 5 year anniversary, and while it was fun and was the best MMO i've ever played, I have to completely disagree with this.

I am no longer 14, I don't have the time to sit and grind for hours on end for a bubble of xp, or camp a rare spawn. And I'll be damned if someone calls me at 4 in the morning for a freakin raid boss spawn. The market that EQ catered to is dead and gone, sorry to say - it was made up of those of us who are now entering our late 20s and early 30s, where we have jobs, and other obligations to which marathon sessions of EQ-like games take a backseat. MMOs these days aren't geared towards kids with short attention spans, buty to the working class person who has a family, job, or goes to school while juggling a full time job, or any combination thereof.

I agree with the rose-tinted glasses analogy, because that's what it is, just a yearning for the good ol' days, whcih you probably wouldn't like now, anyway, simply because it just doesn't fit in your schedule. MMOs right now are a sweet spot for people who want to play, but don't have an empty schedule to be part of the 5% elite, and that's just fine. Make a game that we can all play, give each little lique their own little dose of awesome and call it a day. Give me my "infinite bag space" (I nearly had infinite in EQ, so that doesn't bother me one bit) and my massive amount of hotbars any day of the week over the craziness of EQ. (For the record, even in EQ, I had ~5 hotbars... SK tank ftw)

I have fond memories of those days. They were fun. Sadly, they just have no place in modern gaming society.

I hear what you say, When a new boss was added to an MMO I played my whole legion went in there fought the other race, killing all the mob's, the enemies and trying to kill the boss it self.
That MMO I used to play now is full of instances, I was a proud member of a vietnamese legion called VietStyle where only the best of the server were invited, and I really mean the best not the ones who had the best gear.
Instances ruined that game, a whole full year of camping and waiting for some gear was easily obtainable within 1 week when instances started getting added.
I quitted that game and never touched any MMO ever again.

I don't have high hopes or any hype for GW2. It looks good, and that's all it's going to get from me. I'll buy it, but that will be my last ditch effort for MMOs. MMOs to me honestly is a dying category in video games. There's very few MMOs out there even worth mentioning putting a subscription into, let alone play.

I played WoW for four or so years with friends. Most fun four years of my life gaming I've ever had, but it just wasn't there anymore. Nobody liked it anymore, we'd seen it all, all the same stuff for four years, and in Cataclysm content just was not being rolled out fast enough, so we sat there for months on end with nothing to do. I currently have no subscription in any MMO, and I don't plan to (since GW2 will not require an active subscription). It's just a waste of money to me at this point with any MMO.

I need real pvp, with real risk/reward. All the new MMO's are following WoW's model, which is carebear pvp, instanced pvp, duels, and areas.

I enjoyed MMO's when you could lose your gear and were fighting for high xp/hr leveling areas with other people, anymore it's just a grind fest from one expansion to another with no risk only a time invested requirement.

I agree almost completely. I don't think the game will fail but the first Guild Wars is by far one of the most overrated mmo's ever. I bought the thing and the ONLY reason anyone I talked to continued to play the game on and off was because it was free after purchase. Honestly it just got flat boring after a couple of levels.

The fact that it was free and really only had one other game as competition (WoW) and still didn't end up on top tells me that there is no way in the world the WAY over hyped Guild Wars 2 will do better then SWTOR or WoW because now it's going to have even more competition.

All of that said it does look good and I will buy it. I think it'll even be a great game more then likely. Better then Star Wars when it comes to active players though? That'll never happen.

Eve online balla.... Its the only PVP mmo left that has no limits.

Now.. I dont agree with the SWTOR prediction of 4 million subscribers.. I wasnt that impressed and neither were a lot of people.

My Prediction is this... in 18 months SWTOR will be F2P and so will WoW and subscription based mmos will be dead. GW2 will suck (I loved GW1 but the level limit killed me) and the mmo genre will start dying. It was a nice 10 years WoW but its over..

Losing gear is more of an annoyance than anything else in my opinion, most people wouldn't play the game just because of this. Also class balance is a subject when it comes to PvP, as there will always be underpowered and overpowered classes. How do you suppose a vastly underperforming class participates in PvP against OP classes? Losing gear is a very bad model. In my opinion the arena system back when gear required rating was a step in the right direction. It should be a reward for being successful.
