Intel Computer Problem

Hey Guys -- Here's my problem.

A friend of mine reccomended me to a teacher to check out her computer and see if I could fix her problem.

So I went to her house , and took a look at it, although it never started windows. It showed the motherboard name and then an entry to the bios, and after that the screen went black, and the keyboard didn't even let me change the num lock and caps lock. So I restarted it and went in to the bios.... The thing that I saw was the idle temp of 62C. Now she said that they ran norton yesturday and well if it's idle is 62C which is still very hot how much higher can that get. At one point in the bios it read 70C so I told here that the CPU may be fried or that it gets so hot that it won't start-up. I believe it's a P4 but im not sure because it never said anything on the computer which she bought from a past student from her's.

Specs:
Fans and Heatsink - 1
- Intel Heatsink / Fan
Powersupply - 400 watt - 12W rail - 12A
HD - Samsung - 80 Gig

Other info -
- She said she had virus problems.

First try removing and cleaning out the heatsink and reinstalling it with some AS5 to get the temps down. Once it will run then try the basic...defrag/adware/antivirus. then see where it stands.

Your system specs are as bad as the specs you submit for her problem.

Patient: Doctor I have a pain
Doctor: Where is it?
Patient: Somewhere in my body...

Please specify what the processor is and if the fan is not clogged with dust. Have you opened the system case?

The BIOS reports CPU temperatures at near load. Therefore, the temperature you are seeing is close to its maximum temperature.

I do not think her problem is hardware, and I would not mess with the cooling solution if it is a Dell or other propietary computer.

I think that her problem is software related, most likely the OS. A reformat is most likely necessary.

Yes I have, the entire case has dust. But she didn't have a fan that could blow air at the mobo.

She told me she reformated.

You know now that I think of it.

hmm judging from your problem it could be a number of things.. the hard drive could have gone bad or it could just be windows.. if i were working on it i would look for dust buildups to see if that is restricting the airflow and if its not that try to get your hands on a second processor temporarily to verify if it is a hardware issue
