Hey! Sorry to resurrect a dead thread, but I thought I'd post here and give you guys an update. I just ordered my whole setup, coming almost 2 years after I made my first thread about building my sound system. Four threads later, and much more knowledgeable about audio systems, I have finally ordered my dream system.
Here is what I ordered:
Sound Card: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16829271004
Amp: http://shop.emotiva.com/collections/amplifiers/products/a100
Main Monitors: http://www.ascendacoustics.com/pages/products/speakers/cbm170/cbm170.html
Subwoofer: http://www.hsuresearch.com/products/stf-2.html
(Sound Card -> Amp -> Subwoofer (crossover set around 80 hz) -> Speakers
Here are the other 3 threads I posted about this:
http://www.overclock.net/t/877008/choosing-new-2-channel-speakers-for-music
http://www.overclock.net/t/1070958/cbm170se
http://www.overclock.net/t/748870/possible-4-1-surround-setup-im-skipping-a-center
With each thread I learned a bit more about what I really wanted in a sound system, and this thread I finally centered the build around the CBM-170se's.
One very specific requirement about my setup is I didn't want to use a receiver which many people would probably consider ill-advised, but when using a receiver one generally uses optical out and lets the receiver decode the audio signal. In my case if I have that I cannot have echo cancellation for mumble, which is a serious draw-back to me. That was my logic in choosing a high-quality sound-card / amplifier instead of just a nice receiver.
I have learned a lot about what I need, and what I don't need such as massive power (50 Watts per channel should be much more than I'll ever need), and I appreciate everyone's awesome and amazing help.
astrallite, gorb, simca, the3lement, soloz2, slyfox, monsk, ckaz, this n00b again, pioneerisloud, hybridcore, and tudj, Thank you everyone for all your wonderful help.
