590 or SLI 580?

Can I ask for a little help understanding the difference between theses two? I am helping out a friend with a new build. He wants to really go high end on his GPU for gaming purposes. Two 580's are about $1,000 and a 590 is like $750? Neither is a make or break issue with his budget, but he can't afford to go 3 or 4 way SLI with his current budget. What's really the difference? I am probably looking at it wrong, but I thought a 590 was basically two 580s much like Radeon's 6990 is essentially two 6970's. So why would we not simply go with a 590 and save around $250? Is there an advantage to going 580SLI? I am not really a gamer, so I don't know what he plays. He wants to be able to play everything at max settings though. I would think that a 590 or 580SLI would get that done, but his board will have 4 slots, so an upgrade in the future is possible if need be. If we can get by with the 590, he will most likely get the 3960X. If he needs to go 580SLI, we will drop back to the 3930K to stay within his budget. He is more concerned with his GPU performance than the CPU at this point (though I can't talk him into going 2500K or 2600K... I tried).

If it matters, we are going with either a 3960x or 3930K cpu, 16GB ram, 1000w psu, and we are leaning towards an Asrock x79 Extreme9 mobo. We are building now, so waiting for the 7000 series Radeons or the 600 series Nvidia isn't an option.

SLI 580s outperforms the 590 by quite a bit. Even SLI 570s tends to outperform the 590. The 590 is two 580 GPUs, however they downclock the GPUs significantly in order to lower the power requirements.

The 590 doesn't perform as well as two 580 . That said, if you want to save. Money and OC 590, do that and you save 200$.

That answers my question then. Thank you. 580 SLI it is.

Yep, what he said.

Look at the charts for 590 vs. 580 SLI numbers.
