I went through and read the whole thing, and it really doesn't. It only looks like it does in the 2560x1600 resolution category where everything is GPU limited, or games like metro where its a GPU limitation across the board. They even say in the conclusion:

If you stick to just one GPU really, the faster Phenom II processor and the AMD FX 8150 will be sufficient however you can expect slightly slower framerates until you hit the higher monitor resolutions. The latest Intel processor will give you a lot more underlying performance, and that's going to help you our in minimum frame rates as well. We do have to mention clearly that we measure in average framerates, so in the lower framerate spectrum a slower CPU can make a difference.

That being said, I wonder how an X6 would have stacked up.

I know mate, when i read "965" i overlooked the "i7" prefix. Honest mistake. Title fixed thumb.gif

I read the conclusion and agree that minimum frames count for a lot and that with 2x7970s, there would be a HUGE bottleneck.

In games where CPU performance actually matters, the Phenom only does well at 2560 resolution, where everything is GPU-limited with a single 7970.

At 1920, where things are not so GPU limited, the Phenom and FX are clearly behind.

At 2560, if another 7970 was added into the mix for CrossfireX, the Phenom and FX would again be much slower.

I figured as much, but its OK I would have been excited too. The X4 is a very affordable chip and a lot of people have AM3/AM3+ boards, if they could keep up with a 7970 you could hang on to that hardware for a little longer. biggrin.gif

op here in this thread has 7870s and the results of the tests should pretty much the same as testing a 7970.
