[En.Expreview] NVIDIA Kepler GK100 and GK104 Specifications Spotted - Page 7

I hope Kepler beats Southern Island for some reason. Probably because I've kind of lost faith after it happened (cough...cough...Bulldozer...cough...cough). But really interested to see the competition. Not looking forward to the huge decisions like between the 6970 and 570.

First, kepler won't be out until 2nd half of 2012 wink.gif But I agree. Its time for nvidia to get a kick in the behind.

Let's hope Nvidia doesn't do anything like what they did to the 560.

Pampered the CRAP out of it.
First came stock 560, then Ti, THEN 448 cores and didn't bother to rename a 565?
I mean, come on.

We're gonna be seeing some funky numbers soon.

It went 560Ti -> 560 -> 560Ti (448core)

Although i agree, they should've renamed it the 565Ti

I expect kepler 580 equivalent to be about 30-40% faster than the upcoming 7970....

It isn't, unless you add a bit to the end "...fastest card in my price range." wink.gif

It's no use nVidia having the fastest dual GPU card (For example) at $1k if I'm buying a $300 GPU, is it?

And if the 1500 shader number is true, then nVidia's seriously made their shaders a lot smaller and probably not as fast. (Like AMDs are)

This is weak speculation at best, and an outright lie at worst. Don't hold your breath guys. I doubt Nvidia will pull a rabbit out of their hat this time.

Different architectures, AMD went from VLIW4 to GCN.

Patiently saving my money for nvidias next gen dual gpu, yes the amd 7000s will rock, but nvidia will put them to shame. It's kinda like how sega always came out with the newer console first and kicked ass, but then 6 months later someone else brought their newest to the table and took 'em down a notch. I myself will wait and be happy, oh so very happy

You also mention dropping 'hot clocks' - nvidia cores already ran MUCH faster then AMD's - running at double the core speed.
If anything, they may dis-associate the core from the 'cuda cores' a bit further - just like AMD do, and have a more simplified, many CUDA core architechture backed up by a more efficient back end.
This way they could produce a 1500 or even 2000 CUDA core chip, running at 1.2Ghz+ no problem. Sure, it would be a hot, big beast for 28nm, but isn't that what NV do best?

Most posters seemed to just grasp the 1500 CCs (not simplified) which would equal around 3x transistors if everything else was scaled too. The speculation said simplified cores, i.e. no hot clocks, and that's what I meant by dropping them. If that happens it is useless to speculate what performance they would have since you can't compare them to old cores anymore. 1000, 2000, who cares, it's just a number with no meaning. A die size or transistor count would be much more helpful.

Hopefully Nvidia will add to this gen support for single GPU surround and catch up with AMD. Until then I'm locked to using high end Radeons since dual GPU is a no go for me.

nvidia kinda been falling on their faces since the gt200 series

amd brought the 5xxx series which really hurt them and people were saying wait for fermi even after the wood screw debacle

Im expecting another power hog just slightly faster then southern island at an immensely inflated price

but lets wit and see cuz amd really been biting into nvidia since the 4xxx series they almost closed the gap on the 6xxx series vs gt5xx series and southern islands might totally close that gap

This is weak speculation at best, and an outright lie at worst. Don't hold your breath guys. I doubt Nvidia will pull a rabbit out of their hat this time.

And yet a (rough) doubling of the Cuda cores is exactly what happened when Nvidia went from 8800/9800 - GTX 280 (128 -> 240 cores) and from GTX 280 - GTX 480/580 (240 -> 512).

If you can go from 128 at 65nm to later 240, shrink to 55nm, later move to 40nm and over double the CCs, then surely it's possible to double them again going from 40nm - 28nm.

I'd love to hear how "it's just not possible." rolleyes.gif

That's funny, because it almost describes SI. Slightly faster, at an immensely inflated price.
