Sapphire 6950 2gb unlock question?

Thread Starter
Hey guys, I ve question about the dual bios switch on my card. So, I only switched to the second position and GPU-z already shows me 1536 shader. Is my card now unlocked? Everything is the same ,just shaders are 1536 .thx

That's a soft-unlock. Just shaders. You didn't flash with a 6970 BIOS, so there's less risk of bricking it smile.gif Your lucky. Wish AMD never became wise and let every board switch lol.

All you have to do now is to overclock your Core clock to 880MHz and your Memory clock to 5500MHz and you have a 6970 biggrin.gif

Yes ... it's UNLOCKED ... because the only thing that GETS locked out on the cards IS the SHADERS. I don't know why people don't understand this point ? headscratch.gif

So yes now that you UNLOCKED the shaders all you need to do is manually overclock the card accordingly to reach the HD-6970 level's of performance and beyond, don't mess around with trying to FLASH your card.

Most Stock - HD-6950's = 800 core clock / 1250 memory clock / 1408 shaders

UNLOCKED HD-6950 = 800 core clock / 1250 memory clock / 1536 shaders

Most Stock - HD-6970's = 880 core clock / 1375 memory clock / 1536 shaders

Now if like me you have the Sapphire TOXIC HD-6950 ... {880 / 1375 / 1536 } you don't have much OC'ing left to do wink.gif

If yours is the FLeX or DIRT3 Editions then you got some work to do thumb.gif but should be easy enough, congrats on getting yourself a 6970 for the price of a 6950 applaud.gif

I have mine both unlocked and flashed. Flashing lets you up the voltage and take the clocks up to 6970 range. But honestly it performs just fine just with unlocked shaders, and you can give it a mild OC it in Catalyst to 840/1325. I've taken mine up to 940/1500 for a little fun with benchmarking but I'm not using the stock cooler. Been doing everyday gaming on stock clocks and it's just fine. Edit: maybe some people had different experiences but I couldn't up the voltage or take clocks to 6970 level until it was flashed. (I have a dirt 3, though, not a toxic)

@ Otterclock, you should have been able to ? Did you use Sapphire's TriXX to OC and overvolt ? you don't usually NEED to FLASH a 6950 to reach 880/1375/1536 unless the shaders aren't on your card from the factory, like Asus and Reference cards and some others ... the SAPPhIRE cards and the MSI PE/OC TF3 2GB cards have the 1536 shaders on the 2nd BIOS from the Factory to make it super simple and safe, no need to FLASH those cards.

Also ... keep in mind your (and MOST HD-6950's) should be careful about running their cards at higher voltge if that's what is needed to get to the 6970 levels.  Your card wasn't really designed for it, whereas a card like the TOXIC was ... the TOXIC is factory OverVolted @ 1.175v in the box, unlike your 1.1v and uses a 6970 PCB board with the 6+8 pin power connections and has higher quality Digital VRAMs, SolidState Capacitors, and Sapphires HD BlackDiamond Chokes that are desgined to handle those loads 24/7 ... a few other cards are also, but MOST aren't. I thought I read here on OCN before that the DIRT3 edition could OverVolt using TriXX however it was LIMITED and couldn't reach 1.25v ? it was held down to 1.18v or something ? like by a software or hardware limitation ... so I'd be a little careful FLASHING a different BIOS onto the card that overrides that. Just so you're aware of that. graduated.gif

Ok, I ve used sapphire trixx to OC to 880/1375 ,voltage still stock 1,1V, works fine, temp on load is 59C. but every time i boot up my PC i need to OC again. Dont know how to save clock speed and memory speed via TriXX.

PS. I did 3dmark vantage and got same results as a HD6970, very happy. thx

I'm 99.9% sure toxic cards do not come 880/1375/1536, and with the Dirt3 you just need to use the catalyst to set the power up from 0% to 20%. Then OC in TriXX to 880/1375; it took me about two and a half minutes to get it stable.

Go into the settings tab in TriXX and check the box to save clock speeds on boot. I'm on a different computer now so I cannot direct quote it, but it should be pretty straight forward.

You will need to tick "load on Windows startup" and "restore clocks"
