GTX 480 overclock

Thread Starter
Hello, I recently got my sig rig pieced together and done. I am new to overclocking graphics cards. I have overclocked my reference GTX 480 to 844 on the core, 1688 on shaders, and 933 on memory. 1.088 volts. It is stable in MSi Kombustor.

I have 2 questions:

1: Does memory overclocking affect performance that much?
2: I heard a 480 at 835 on the core pretty much = a stock 580. Is that true?

Here is a picture of it in GPU-Z:

Temps are below 100c, which past that is bad for GF100 iirc.

I did use MSi Afterburner, and I was using kombustor.

have you changed the fan profiles, you can get temps down but more noise if you change these
I personally don't like to get my 480's over 80 on air. they will run hotter but you don't know how hot your VRM circuits are.
if you run them in the 90's you will probably shorten the life span of the card.
have you unlocked the voltage control?

Mem overclock wont benefit much really, you wont notice it in games anyway,i dont clock my mem high as it tends to hold you back if your going for high clocks on water.

That is a good overclock. Memory overclocks yeild lilttle gains, but OC'ing to 1000MHz wont hurt any and will help a bit with bandwidth.

I have backed down a few mhz and put the voltage back down to 1.058 instead of 1.088; due to temperature. It is still stable in kombustor, not artifacting

I was running kombustor in 16x aa, extreme mode for about 10 minutes, temps rose to around 100. Should I be using that setting or is that unrealistic? It was about 10 degrees cooler at 8x aa.

I have a feeling if I did not use the stock cooler, this would be a great overclocking chip. I had the memory up near 1ghz and core near 900 and it showed no artifacting in kombustor. (only for a few seconds, just to see the chips limits. I could probably go farther, as I did that at around 1.07 volts.)

Pop off the shroud on your gtx 480 and cable tie down a nice 80 cm fan directy over the gpu on the heatsink.

Stock cooler for 470s and 480s are horrible, but with a tiny bit of modding, can function quite nicely, doesnt void warranty either.

I got my gtx 470 running almost 800 core, and its whisper quiet compared to stock cooling setup, and it took me all of 5 minutes.

You need a nice open air case though, and a side panel fan makes a huge difference with plastic shroud removed.

My temps went from 93 degrees at stock speed which is 607

with shroud off and fan straped down i get 85 degrees at 775 mhz, and its much quieter probably 10 db at least

Starting with the ForceWare 257 series drivers, NVIDIA is now using OCP at all times, meaning OCP now protects against any possible program that would generate an excessive load (as defined by NVIDIA), and not just FurMark and OCCT. At this time there’s definitely still a driver component involved as NVIDIA still throttles FurMark and OCCT right off the bat, but everything else seems to be covered by their generic detection methods. http://www.geeks3d.com/20110324/nvidia-geforce-gtx-590-officially-launched-specifications-and-reviews-hd-6990-is-still-faster/

Furmark/Kombustor are said to go beyond any real world situation. Can brick some cards. Nvidia have put OverClockProtection in their drivers since 590 came out for that reason.
