I'm surprised SSD-defragger-guy hadn't actually thought about the theory behind defragmenting only to realize it is an exercise in futility given the drive platform.
If you're talking about me, I knew it was futile. I have a scientific mind, I just had to see what it would do. I only did it once, and that definitely did not help, considering that SSD's performs best with random read.

It should come with the latest depending on where you bought it from since the firmware released earlier this year, anything after should be w/ the latest unless you got it from a mom/pop shop that had a release batch or something tongue.gif

I also bought today 840 pro 256gb. Fresh installed final licensed win8 on my new Asus n76 (8GB ram/i7quad/GT650 2Gb /... ) .

Problem is, that my 4K benchmark is only around 30/55 (read/write)! I have just one partition (no problem with alignment), enabled AHCI, tried all Sean's tweaks without any effect on 4k performance. Also other performances are around 10% lower than yours, but 4K is the most problematic!

PS: my total score in AS SSD benchmark is around 1050 frown.gif

Maybe you can give me any sugestion? You have made your benchmark on empty SSD or OS installed?

Thank you!

Thanks. It's from NCIX and they were out of them about a month ago so thinking of it in that sense it should be up to date smile.gif

Hey guys,

I just got my Samsung 840 pro 512gb. I bought it for the hardware encryption. I guess I was expecting that it would have at least the most basic amount of instructions about how to use the encryption, but samsung didn't including anything beyond basic install info. The magician 3.2 software has nothing on encryption I could find.

I have searched high and low for how to make use of the hardware encryption to no avail. At one point a website suggested Embassy Security Center. But that program requires a TPM chip which I don't have.

Can anybody point me in the right direction? I'm already aware of and have used truecrypt in the past... I am looking for the speed benefits of hardware encryption.

Thanks

PC:
Asus p9x79 deluxe mobo
i7 3930k
gtx 680 gpu
Samsung 830 OS SSD

Samsung 840 pro hot swap SSD (the one I am trying to get encrypted).

FWIW, my AS-SSD score on the drive is 1009. Actually slightly lower than a Neutron GTX 240gb which scored 1019. 830 scored only 740.

Should I expect it to come with the most recent firmware or will I have to update it?

My 830 SSD came with the new firmware and I bought it almost two months ago. After installing Samsung's Magician software I tried to update the firmware and said that I already had the most recent firmware.

I can't believe this, I just got my PSU that has SATA headers, installed Lubuntu on Samsung 840 120GB. The boot time is five seconds. Five. And the desktop is usable instantly, I've never seen anything this fast, and I've had Lubuntu and Puppy Linux on plenty of conventional HDDs.

Received a 840 Pro today, haven't any time to migrate the Windows 8 Pro system as yet, this is to replace the Samsung 830 (IdeaPad Y580 full HD) as the SSD 830 is already 2 Months old biggrin.gif
> > > >

Will not upgrade the SSD on the Thinkpad as it will not improve the performance due to hardware limitations, may upgrade to a 830 512GB for extra storage in the near future.

Just finished installing Win 8 successfully on my new 840 Pro. Sean's guide was great. Optimized the drive. Getting ready for the HDD setup tommorow.

On the main SSD other than programs like MS Office, 3DMark11, etc.....are you guys putting games on the SSD or oh the HDD?

Want to utilize the small SSD storage space with the most benificial usage. Any suggestions welcome to first time SSD user. smile.gif

I have steam on my HDD RAID 0 with a 64GB cache drive. Before that I would use steam mover or symbolic links to move games onto my SSD from my HDD that I played a lot.
