Anyone?
Thanks!

I ran 120GB Corsair ForceGT's in RAID 0 for about 6 months, it was useless. Besides benchmark numbers the response time seemed slow and waiting for the RAID array to boot was also slow. When I moved to a single Samsung 830 I actually felt it was an improvement. It was cool seeing almost 1GB/s sequentials, but if you want super fast just get 64GB of RAM and make yourself a RAM drive.

lol someday all storage will be that fast... someday...

and yes, the other thing to keep in mind is that while the transfer speed is faster for raided drives, there is extra latency introduced by the controller.

Why?

Isn't the purpose of effective Garbage Collection and TRIM to prevent this from happening?

I think I figured it out, I had a botched windows install. My CPU was having bad performance issues too.

Wife gave me my x-mas gift early. Got a 120gig samsung 840. Got everything installed today and got to say it is impressive. What programs do you all use to benchmark and see what life is left on it.

First: Benchmarking too much will hurt it.
That said, AS SSD benchmark is what I've seen and what I use. I personally use AIDA64 for S.M.A.R.T. but there's other programs, like CrystalDiskInfo that does just that.

In terms of raw numbers, yes 2 128gb pros at raid 0 would be faster, but most of the benefits are to sequential speed and high queue depth random reads and writes. Most normal uses, you won't really see the benefits. There are also other factors to consider. What motherboard/chipset do you have? Does it support TRIM over raid?

As to your other question, yes, unpartitioned space is the same thing as over provisioning,

I would say that personally, I wouldn't bother with the 128gb pros just because of the limited nand dies that prevent the controller from using it's full speed. To me, if you aren't going to get 256gb 840 Pros for raid, it makes more sense to just get 250gb standard 840s. In raid the reads will be just as fast (possibly faster) than the 128 pros, and the writes would only be a little bit slower (and still faster than a single 256gb Pro).

Anyway, if you wanted to see a good comparison of 1vs2 128gb Pros, you can take a look here (if it's not allowed to link to another forum let me know and I'll remove it): http://www.xtremesystems.org/forums/showthread.php?284006-Samsung-840-pro-128-gb-single-e-raid-0-bench

Thanks for the reply!

The boost in sequentials should be pretty useful to me, I think. I am getting mostly new guts for my rig, including an ASROCK mobo that they've enabled TRIM in RAID for recently, so good to go in that respect.

Thanks for the confirmation re: unpartitioned space, too. And the link!

Nope, I personally have nothing against it, I'd be all for performance ... i don't have any important data. I just like to make sure the noobs are aware of the possible dangers

Currently I'm only running a single 250GB 840, but I would love to see your results.

I can link you to threads of other RAID0'd SSDs, but I haven't come across any RAID0 Samsung SSD setups

Sorry, doing this now. redface.gif Going to update again around New Year's Eve once everyone has unwrapped their presents and verified they work.

Edit; done with the current update, and exhausted after a day of cleaning house so it can get dirty again opening presents in the morning. biggrin.gif If I've missed anyone or if anyone's entries need updating then PM me. smile.gif Merry Christmas!
