[Official] Samsung SSD750/830/840/850 Owners Club - Page 143

I just purchased a Samsung 840 Pro 128Gb (upgraded from an OCZ Agility 3 60Gb) and I was wondering if I can use the Clone feature in SSD Magician to straight copy over Windows 7 so as not to lose any of my data/settings. Also if this is possible is there any performance hit for doing this vs. a true Windows fresh install?

If this isn't possible what is the best way to go about cloning my old OS so I don't lose anything?

Last question, how much of a jump am I going to see going from an OCZ Agility 3 60Gb vs the Samsung 840 Pro 128Gb?

Compared to my modest 120GB 840 your SSD is really fast. I don't know whether it's a noticeable difference but on paper at least my SSD is pretty slow.

Well, the problem with cloning software is, do they realize that the SSD has to be aligned? Apricorn makes software they say will do it, but it won't. Acronis says it will do it, but it does not. I have no idea whether Norton Ghost will do it, but it is complicated to use and is not without faults. The absolutely best and foolproof way is Paragon Migrate it is not free ($19.95 US), but is quick and foolproof. I own it and have used it probably 50 times, and it has never made a mistake. It will clone an hard drive to SSD or SSD to hard drive. I have an extra hard drive and I use it once a week to clone my SSD to it. I have the best backup there is. A duplicate of my drive that I can plug in and boot into any time. It has many more uses than a 1 time thing.

Thanks, I guess maybe I should have got one. No sweet 830 256 pro boxing day sales that I see so far.

Let's keep our eyes peeled!

Edit: I meant 840pro

I'll be cloning (or not) from my OCZ Agility 3 to my Samsung 840 Pro, if that matters.

I know quite a few people who have done it and the SSD was not aligned. I did it once and the alignment was 31. If you visit the Acronis forum you will find a rather heated debate there about whether it does or not. I gave up on it quite a while ago. Use it if you like.
