I just picked up a 2nd Samsung 840 Series 500 GB SSD. Neither are hooked up yet as I'm still working on the builds.

Both are from NewEgg. The 1st cost $328.49 and came with a code for Far Cry 3. It was the bare bones SSD.

The 2nd just arrived on Friday. It cost $322.98 and has the mounting kit included.

Neither are the PRO versions. Should I RAID these and use a WD 1TB Caviar Black as the backup, or just run them as completely separate drives?

I'll be reading through this thread as to how to use them the best way. If I knew more about them then I would buy even more. The cost per GB is where SSD's will (I think) bottom out at.

Why do the reads/writes/IOPS go up from the 128GB Pro to the 256GB Pro, but then there is no difference between the 256GB Pro and the 512GB Pro?

Really good scores!

I doubt you'll see any benefit from a RAID setup, as your drives are ridiculously fast already. I would use them as separate drives. One for Windows, programs and whatever else you have (I would put my VM's on it) and one for games.

Because the channels double. However, the 512 model has the same amount of channels as the 256 one so you see no difference.

Hi!

been searching the net and have not been able to find much information regards peeps running the Crosshair V with 2 SSD's in raid0 config, so will post my results here.

Im using 2 x Samung 840 Pro's 128gb flashed with the latest firmware, latest motherboard bios, latest raid driver.

Im not sure how good these results are or if something is amiss, as the Intel results ive seen in certain benchmarks are quite a bit higher.

This is my first time using an SSD's so may have done something wrong, but I did do my research and set everything up appropriately.

Anyhow enough writing here are the pics.

From what I have seen, on Intel rigs, the 4k results in AS SSD and Crystaldiskmark are twice as high.

So am not sure if its something ive done incorrectly or its the limitations of the 990 chipset.

Hope some peeps in the know can comment on these results and hopefully its just something Ive done wrong

I left the computer on overnight to see if installing RST would make difference. It did not.
The computer was hung in the morning. It behaves the same. About 20 minutes after I rebooted, it hung while I was working on a proposal and I lost some work.

Not sure what to do here. I contacted Samsung and haven't heard back yet. They'll probably tell me to send it back and get a new one. Not sure if I want to try this drive again.

My return window closes on the 31st. I only have a couple of days left to send it back.

Your drive got great score,i cant believe that something wrong with it.Did you try safe mode, will there be problems.Man,before you send him back i would try secure erase him and install only windows on it to see. After that there is nothing more you can do.

Again, is there any information in your system log?\ on the hang?

Nope, nothing there.

The last event before the thing locked up this morning was -
The Adobe Flash Player Update Service service entered the stopped state.

The next event is from me rebooting the machine this afternoon.

Whatever is causing it to hang doesn't give the machine time to write an error to the log.

Since the first reboot today when I lost some work, the machine has been fine. Did some more work on the proposal, surfed, sent some email, played Borderlands 2 for an hour or so...

It is driving me nuts. When I used a mechanical HDD for a boot device, I could leave the machine on for over a week with no rebooting required. This is my first SSD. I love the speed but a desktop that is unstable isn't something I bargained for. I did my homework before I bought the drive and the Samsung looked like the King of the current crop. I did read about some problems that the units initially had, but I thought that the firmware update took care of that.
