More information needed. 50 MB/s on what benchmark? Post a screenshot. Run AS-SSD and post it.

Considering the non-Pro TLC drives will last decades life span is irrelevant. Samsung claims their TLC NAND has a P/E of only 1000, whereas it was tested to have 3-4000 P/E.

If 1000 lasts 11 years you can easily see life span isn't the issue at all. What is the issue is performance and I don't know if the 'slow' performance is noticeable.

At one point in time I was writing an average of 1GB/hour to my drives, which means the drive would have lasted me 40 or so years. Now I have dropped to almost 0.65GB/hour I no longer care, as the drive will probably outlast my children.

Pro's advantage is 2 year of extra warranty(influence resale value in year 2-4) & write speed, otherwise people will probably be happy with non-pro and more money.

I don't know how well a Pro performs but I see no difference in game startup. Torchlight shows absolutely no difference whatsoever and Skyrim shows an increase between area loads but depending on the area it's not something incredible.

The biggest gain has come from programs and my VM's starting far quicker and being more responsive.

Has anyone here got a link to a benchmark of different overprovisions on the 840? http://www.anandtech.com/show/6489/playing-with-op gives some data for the 840 pro, but I'm interested in the ordinary 840 (250GB version).

The workload will be very light desktop use. I don't expect space will be at a tight premium, however I don't want to overprovision more than is necessary just because I'd like to get the best GB/$ ratio possible while still allowing ample space for wear levelling and keeping performance consistent.

I OP my own 830s by about 20%, so unless I can get some data on the 840s, I'll go with that (since that seemed to be the sweet spot for the 840 pro in the linked tests), but I'm hoping I might be able to get away with like 10% given the light workload.

Depends on what you mean by any space that isn't used. If you mean unallocated space that is not part of the disk partition then that space is used by the SSD for additional over-provisioning. if you man unused space on a disk volume - that is not used by the SSD as over-provisioning space.

Well yeah, in a sense, however the user is not particularly technical - rather than have to explain TRIM and leaving free space, I intend to partition in such a way that if he ever fills the drive, there is still ample space for garbage collection.

I'm also not entirely convinced that TRIM is as effective as leaving unpartitioned space, but I am open to learning otherwise - I might even repartition my own 830s if I was sure it wouldn't adversely impact performance.
