@geronimo

  1. Trim should still work, AFAIK TC just encrypts the partition/data. Even if TRIM doesn't function garbage collection will still have you covered for degradation and speeds. It's an idle feature on the drive's controller, so just make sure that you have it set to never turn off(go to sleep). Speeds should be the same(ish) as if you wern't using TC (don't know if it slows the OS down, could also be a factor), Samsung's controller is the same speed for compressible and in-compressible data, IIRC. Some reviews out there may test this performance metric.
  2. Only use the intel ports sata 3 for any ssds
  3. what Sean said.

  2. Yes, the current Marvell controllers on mobos suck. With your new mobo you will have 6 Intel ports, 4 SATA 3GB/s and 2 SATA 6Gb/s. ou can put all your drives on it fine.
  3. If it is just a dock and it fits the drive it should work. As for updating the firmware, you may need to leave it connected to the Intel SATA ports to be detected and updated.

yeah TC is truecrypt. I was to lazy to write it again :-).
I'm hopping that considering I'm getting an i5 (and I will OC it) which has AES instructions built-in, the impact on performance with encryption will be minimal or maybe even unnoticeable. hopefully biggrin.gif.
I'll try to avoid Marvell if I can for the SSD. I hope I'll be able to get all the devices on the Intel controller working properly including the most important to me, the RAID0 array cos that one is for the programs and games.
As I understand I can use bootable CD/USB to flash firmware to SSD from "DOS" so I guess I wont need to stick SSD to dock to do this. Which Firm should I install? Is the last one also the best or I should just try first with the one that is in when I buy it?
Is there a way at later stage to add 1 smaller SSD to start using SSD caching if I decide to, or that will require re-installation of OS?
Also I need a confirmation if SSD caching would be encrypted when used inside this Win7 (TC), cos if it's not then it's a security hole and I can't use it.
thanks.

I wouldn't get any cpu that didn't support TC, AES support alone will limit the performance degredation from use..
The Samsung Magician program will creat a bootable usb stick for you.
Newest firmware.
If it's data on a drive, I believe it's all encrypted, cached or not, and TC happens at the OS level. If not there are secure flavors of linux out that you could use if security is your main concern.

Picked up an 830 256GB this last week. WOW. My C300 was nice but this is ridiculous. I also upgraded my CPU and MB and the MB has a UEFI BIOS so it boots much quicker than my old board. Great drive.

Amazon has the 512Gb for $640. Cheapest I've seen it anywhere (next closest is $710). Thinking of pullin the trigger unless I really should just wait to see what the new marvell controller provides. Ugh - decisions decisions.

A 512gb is part of my upcoming build but I suck at making a decision like this one tongue.gif Grab it when its $70 less than I've seen it anywhere...or see if new 512Gb M3/M4s come out?? But then again that may not be for months rolleyes.gif

guys, i forgot to ask. Is there any way to do backup/image of the win7 when using TrueCrypt with SSD? I know I can't use Ghost like for the past ~10 years cos It's running from outside OS but is there a way from inside Windows? maybe that integrated system backup? I never run that one so I'm not sure how it works. I guess this is the one big disadvantaged when using TrueCrypt.
thanks.
