Hey lads,

I'm having a spot of trouble with my SSD.

Sometimes, the computer will randomly hang when loading windows on a cold boot.

It doesn't happen every time, but maybe 1 out of 10 times, the windows logo will stay there for about a minute and the HDD light stays on completely instead of blinking.

Any ideas what's up?

Thanks,

-Rich

Do you have a usb device plugged in? Some times that can cause a hang at boot. Happens to me some times when i have my external plugged in.

I'm about to buy the 840 pro to use as a boot drive but i can't decide between the 128Gb and the 256Gb. What's everyone's thoughts?

Games and Data are both stored on separate drives. I'v been told 128Gb fills faster than you would expect. Is this correct?

depends entirely on your usage. I use up only 50GB out of the 119GB formatted space on my 128GB drive. However, i have all my data and games on my HDD. Typically 128GB is fine for OS and programs, you will have plenty of room. But if you start putting a bunch of games and data you will want more room. You should always try to keep about 10% free space if possible as well, so take that into account.

If you store both your Games and data on separate drives, the 128GB will be plenty for a boot drive. I don't have any games but I have my OS, an enormous hyberfil.sys file (due to 32GB RAM and needing to have Hibernate enabled for my UPS), and all my productivity programs on my 128GB 840 Pro and I'm using up only 56GB. SSDs need 20-25% overhead to avoid excessive writes. I have over 50% right now so I've got a lot of room to expand.

One way to determine how much capacity you need is to assume 30GB (I said assume; many people may not need this much) for the OS and regular programs. Add any games you might want to keep on the drive (games won't run any faster on a SSD but they will load much faster), then multiply by 1.35 to factor in the needed overhead (keep in mind, a formatted drive won't be as big as its rating, hence the 1.35 instead of 1.25). Without any games, that would mean you could get by fine with a 64GB SSD. A 128GB SSD would allow you to keep some of your favorite games on it (possibly all of them, depending on how many and their size).

Ah! that could be the culprit. Of course...

I have an external hard drive that I've been using for 3 years now. That's got to be it, since it's become a bit slow and the only devices plugged in are the keyboard and mouse.

I'll try and unplug it next time the hang happens to see if it's that's it. Guess there's not much else I can do about it though, eh? :\

Very correct. In fact I got the 250GB version and I'm already using about 60%. Mind you, the editing programs like Photoshop and Vegas hardly take up any space, it's the games that do. Battlefield 3 alone takes up 34GB ! I have GTA IV installed on my SSD as well. However WoW is on the HDD, since loading times won't benefit that much anyway from being on an SSD.

Hope that answers your question smile.gif

I advise you if you can afford it then get 256GB all the way, sure many will tell you that 128GB is enough, but nothing is enough these days when later you start to put something in it, so for long run, 256GB is a best choice, first you have room to add more over 128GB, and second you still will have room for write and whatever and keeping the drive at about 30-60%, with 128GB i doubt you keep it under 30-60% for long time, and sooner or later you will figure out you want more, i see many many move from 128GB to 256GB but never see some moved from 256GB to 128GB, so to be in safe side i recommend you 256GB all the way.
