[Official] Samsung SSD750/830/840/850 Owners Club - Page 501

Since summer 2012 i had a 830 256GB.I'm thinking it's time to replace it with 850series EVO or PRO.What do you believe,worth it ?
No.
Only upgrade to a larger one if u need more space. Otherwise the speed difference for 'normal' use is negligible, imho.

I know the Samsung firmware has certain features that you may lose in Raid is this true? Also if this is the case what do you gain other than 4k large file transfer in Raid 0. I had my 2 840 Pros in Raid 0 for the last year and received the RMA replacement but also have the 850 pro. Would it be better to sell the 840's and just get another 850 pro 1 tb to make it raid 0? or just say screw it don't raid and wait until some newer M.2 NVME drives are released?

Biggest advantage of RAID0 is better sequential read/write performance which can be relevant if you copy a lot of larger files (e.g. video, raw, games, ...) around.

Got ya!

So if I am just going to install the games and have them on the drive I wont see as much of an improvement unless I were to move them to another drive / etc. Currently I house more of my videos on the 4TB drives.

If this is the case, then it would make more sense to not Raid as I do not move nearly enough videos to the drive.

Of course it needs a lot of planning, TRIM is available to some raid controllers like the Intel series 5 and 6, some with firmware hacks, and some with bios hacks. But I have a Asus crosshair and not any sort of Intel controller, and hacking firmwares and bios is not my thing, it cost to much to brick my mb, maybe some sas controllers have it too. And as performance is concerned I think that the raid addressing in its stripe size is different for different uses, eg 4k for os, small files see the most benifit than a larger strip size, if you say have 2 drives in raid with a stripe size of 4k, you'll have 2k on one and 2k on the other to make the stripe, thus very fast switching between drives to make your stripe. So if you have two files that take an LBA area of 2k, one will sit on one on will stay one the other, there will be no benefit at all, so as long as the file is bigger than 2k you will see a benefit, so that's what I'm on, if you want bigger files to see more of a benifit make the raid partition with a bigger stripe size, and the full use of the hdd cache will come as an advantage.

Note to self that raid 0 sometimes fails so I wouldn't store my family pics on it smile.gif

BIOS have had a version of Intel RST oROM that supports TRIM for some time now. You should be able to see the version in the BIOS. If you post it, I can tell you whether you need a hack, but you probably don't.
Where? I got the Asus crosshair 5 formula z, think it has an and sb950 chipset, I just assumed mine didn't have trim in raid not much info on Asus and and sites about raid commands
