They are M3 x 1/4-Inches long. That's what I used to mount my 840 Pro and they fit perfectly.

maybe depending on usage. Most likely the difference would not be eye opening like a HDD to a SSD.

I got me a 120 GB 840 (standard because the Pro was 50% more) for my gaming rig. I'm actually copying the 250 GB drive in my laptop to the new one since I only need 120 GB on it and I'm going to dual-boot with Ubuntu and Windows 7 on my shiny new desktop and I'll take130 GB more any day. I'll split it about even (110 GB each OS) and resize if I need to.
