Card upgrade reccomendation for SWTOR - Page 2

post #11 of 20
wait until January, card prices will drop dramatically. then start lookin about what would be the most optimum.
Like they also said, Check your power supply, check up on it's specifications and see if you will have to upgrade that as well!thumb.gif

An HD5770/HD6770 would be the best compromise of power, without a complete CPU bottleneck. It should be able to run SWTOR with no issues. You are however running a rather outdated setup, so your mileage may vary. You will however definitely notice a performance difference between your IGP and an HD5770/HD6770 as it should pretty much max out the game.

@OP

I haven't played the finished game but I'm willing to bet a single AMD Radeon 6850 (which you can get/find two in your price-range) would be plenty juice for SWTOR. I did play the beta for it and I had no problems and smooth as butter game play with a single 6850.

It's a cheap but effective DX11 card and I think it not only fits your budget but would fit nicely with the rest of your system. If you wanted a slight bump up you could do a 6870. On the Nvidia side you're looking at a GTX460 or 560 (Ti or otherwise, 448 or otherwise), or for lesser money a 550 or 450 GTS.

But my vote goes to a 6850.

Thanks a lot for the responses everyone, the reviews on the 6850 and 6870 seem rather good, I think I'll be leaning towards the 6870.

Its definitely a good card, and its got plenty of oomph for most games, but just be aware that your rig will more than likely bottleneck the card.

Do you think the bottlenecking it would do would be bad? As in making that card not be worth it, as opposed to a HD5770/HD6770

Bottlenecking would be bad due to the fact you wouldn't be able to utilize the full extent of the GPU you get. How far your CPU will bottleneck a HD6870, and how much performance you will lose I couldn't tell you. You will not bottleneck as much with an HD5770, however its also a slower card.

The only way to know for sure is to get a HD6870 and see how much CPU and GPU utilization is present within your system while gaming. An overclock could also decrease the amount of bottlenecking present from your CPU, if you haven't done so already.

You may be a little limited by your CPU, but at 1080p a 6870 will play much nicer than a 6770.

6770 or 6850 should be a good fit for your system. but yah unless you have a well made power supply, you wont be able to go above those 2 cards till the mid end southern islands cards come out next year.
