My cat has a magic touch? Restarts my computer simply by touching the case? - Page 3

I've had my BIOS change its settings and I suspect it is the house cat occasionally brushing up against the computer. :|

My DVR turns on and off randomly when using the cat attachment. It seems the heat from the HDD on top attracts those fuzzy little creatures as a good place to sit.

I don't even have subscription notifications turned on, but OCN was emailing me every day with threads I posted in after the switch, and this is the only thread it didn't alert me to being updated.... *sigh*

Ok, so it can be cats... wasn't sure if I was just being overly paranoid. Good to know.

About the PSU, its listed in my sigrig, an OCZ ModXstream Pro 700w... I've never had any issue with it ever in the... 2 or so years I've had this... And it only started happening immediately after I switched my desk out and the cat was rubbing into it there... See, I had a much nicer desk first, but the gf is back in college and needs a good writing surface (we don't have a dining room table.... the dining room is the computer room redface.gif So anyway, I had this old metal tube framed desk taken apart in my closet so I put thie nice one in the room for her and put my comp in this crap desk... My cats were still able to touch and rub into my computer in the old spot, but it was up on top of the desk, no metal touching the sides or anything. So I just want to clarify if that could be the issue, cause I can't really afford to replace anything at all if it blows right now frown.gif

Anyway, I'll likely mount the computer directly to the wall and see if that helps. I also noticed that the desk is very close to the edge of the carpet, its on tile floor but my cable modem and power bar are on the carpet and so is the usb cable as I said b4 going to the tv. Could this be "amplifying" the charge in any way, or contributing more charge from multiple sources? Cause as I said, this NEVER happened till the computer was put down low and was being touched by metal frame on both sides...

Also, about PSU grounding... I thought grounding was done via power cable to outlet.... I've never had a PSU with an actual ground wire to screw to the case or anything b4... though I've only owned a handful of PSU's in my life, and only began reading about them a few years back with never really getting into any major details... just a few reviews here and there... So yea, is there an easy way to run my own ground, I don't mind popping the PSU apart and soldering a wire or lead or anything, I'm quite handy with that sort of thing, and I've never cracked a PSU open b4 so it sounds fun smile.gif

Anywho... thanks for all the helpful info and funny comments, really made my day heh

You said, "the cat wants attention." Cats have a way of getting what they want. Seems the cat wins.

mine hates those things, mine will steal your seat though..
to Op: have you plugged it into a different socket? Grounding is useless is said socket isn't grounded itself

Yea, gonna try a new socket, possibly mounting the case to the wall, been busy, and replacing the cheapo power bar its hooked up to currently... Everything seems to be running fine now though... I've done some stress tests to see if anything has become unstable and its all good... Though my HDD seems to be making some noise... I think its about to die... and I'm out of spares... and I was about to buy a few HDD's b4 the price gouging and now have NO money for one... yay me rolleyes.gif

For sure... She always wants my attention when I'm busy, and shuns me when I'm free... I think she just hates me tongue.gif

I know this is probably considered a dead thread and it will most likely be against the rules....

I just had to thank you all for providing a thread full of such win, especially this quote which had me laughing like a little girl for the last 10 minutes. "My sister had a cat when I was growing up and the cat took a dump on my pillow, I was out partying all night and came home and crashed in my bed. When I woke up I had cat poo all over my face and I think some went in my mouth a bit. Ever since then I've nevered liked cats. anyways cheers."

The general lesson I got from said thread of win is that cats and computers, or anything else electrical for that matter don't mix, good thing I avoided getting one all these years!
