Well since I own a 6GB, 8GB (2 systems, or used to be) and now a primary 16GB machine, I'll share my bit on this.

Back when my 920 was still running (I consider it dead because HDD died) Windows used to run on 1.5GB itself on boot + other processes. Once I start playing games (such as Starcraft 2 that just shoots past 2GB) it eventually ends up eating past 5GB worth of total usage (I also start running other programs) and I also leave it on for periods of time because I hate booting up over and over.

Then, when I finally went to 2600k with 8GB, at first it was a blessing to see so much free ram, felt good. When I put that to the test and moved to it as my primary machine, I was able to use as close as 6GB maximum. But then you know, people hear of sales like, "$10 OFF ON THIS MEMORY KIT" so I couldn't resist and bought another Kingston kit, it happened to be the same exact specs but the design seemed to be different.

So why not? Someone already mentioned e-peen, let's go with that.

When Pentium 4 Northwoods were common, what was it, like 256MB and 512MB that was more typical and common, with 1GB being a lot? So yes, if you were to use it for basic use to this day, more than those amounts would help. If you've got it with 2GB RAM using Windows XP or something, and asking if RAM will help in performance situations that CPU limited, then that doesn't even apply as valid towards what I was saying.

Extra RAM down the line can and often does help. I'm not saying it will for every PC for every possible use. It does, of course, vary, but in general, I think that stands as a point, maybe less so with a huge amount of overkill RAM in today's cases, but still.

I used half of my 6GB idle on the desktop due to background apps... Steam, Heavily modded Waterfox (Firefox) (lots of addons), JDownloader, Both sides of 1080p monitor full of Win 7 Gadgets, etc. Once I got a demanding game going I was using 80%+

But mainly because it is cheap so why not? I got my G.Skill Tridents 12GB (3x4GB) 2000Mhz (9-9-9-24-T1) for $85 free shipping. I have experienced how annoying it can be running out of RAM.

How many people on the planet JUST use a computer for gaming?

A computer can do what ever you run on it - a computer is a multi purpose machine and I am fairly sure that people that "only game" on their computer dont exist. Everyone I know that are computer gamers also do a TON of other stuff with their computers.

If you "only game" on a computer BUY A CONSOLE. thumb.gif

I love how the past few posts went completely off topic and start blaming it on "background apps". Lets get one thing straight a real computer gamer doesn't run anything in the background while pwning shiz up. So the entire idea of having 200 tabs open in firefox in the background is not even a valid reason. The truth is there is no reason other then its cheap, and people think it will help future proof their system (somehow), and mostly epeen. The logical reason is these so called "wannabe gamers" like to run everything on their computer while playing games, this is why they need 16GB of ram to play MW3, do some photoshop editing, surf the web, watch a movie, all at the same time. Logically a real gamer would never use above 4GB like I said before, 64bit games are very uncommon.
