Why do gamers put 16 GB of RAM in their systems? - Page 35

I put 16GB in mine because it was cheap, to fill up all the slots, and to future proof for games/programs that will use more than 8GB.

There's no major argument against more RAM... it is a question of how people justify it. (I see people's actions in terms of incentive and cost-benefit due to an economics background)
Economic costs. $30 is not $0.
So should you spend money to get more memory which may provide zero benefit? That's the question. The answer is subjective but not many are realizing this point. You don't have to do everything just because it is cheap (not free).

Why do people spend $300 more on another 6970 that may provide no benefit because some games don't support crossfire? The logic applies to everything, but it is cheapest for ram, making it the least effective for ram.

If they have 16GB and aren't using it when they get it, it is very likely they will find a way to use it because it is there, and thus because they can. Perhaps they get into doing YouTube lets plays and from there use video editing. At the price of ram, "it is better to have and not need (yet), then to need and not have" I believe was posted a while back, and it is correct. $30 makes little difference everywhere else, and if they can spare the little extra, there is no problem in getting it.

For gaming, because:
1) Crossfire support is available in most AAA/AA games or will be coming.
2) Games are much more likely to be GPU bottlenecked that RAM bottlenecked.
3) Game GPU requirements have increased steadily and consistently over the last 15+ years. Game memory requirements have not changed much/at all in 5+ years and have no indication of changing in the near future.

There is a vastly higher probability of benefit from Crossfire than 16GB of RAM for gaming.

I think people have alot more RAM now as its so cheap.

As a comparison, my purchase history.

December 2011 - 16gb (4x 4gb) Corsair Vengance 1600mhz 9-9-9-24 - £75
January 2009 - 6gb Corsair Dominator (3x 2gb) 1600mhz - £269.99

I think when building a expensive £1k+ system... <<£100 on RAM is a small amount... meaning you can have 8gb/16gb or more.

I never use more than 4 gb of RAM so why did i get 8gb?
Because it was £33.99 and i had some money to spend.
Why hate on other peoples choices?
