Why do gamers put 16 GB of RAM in their systems? - Page 37

EDIT: Wow, a big response form the community on this one. Let me clarify my question a little. What I meant was why do people who only game (with some minor exceptions) get 16 GB? Yes, you have all made it clear that a lot of RAM can make a difference where needed. But in gaming? You're not going to see a difference between 8 and 16 GBs of RAM. Sure, RAM is cheap, but since when has something being cheap but having zero use been an excuse to buy it? Just my opinion. Your money, and I'm not jealous you have 16 and I have 8 as all of you have pointed out, RAM is dirt cheap. biggrin.gif

Game recording? Video editing tutorials and such. =)

I run games at the same time with video editing and rendering export...

Why mod a computer case for looks?
Why use compression fittings rather than barbs even though barbs are cheaper?
Why use thicker more expensive (not really) tubing instead of the cheaper thinner stuff?
Why use noctuas or gentletyphoons or enermax fans when you can get just as good as a fan cfm-wise for a couple of bucks?
Why buy $200-1k cases when a simple $50-100 case would do just as well?
Why SLI 2-4 580's/590's or equally good cards when 1 is normally overkill enough?
Why buy a MAC when PC's are 1/4 the price and 4x faster?
Why put lights in your computer?
Why do a lot of stuff people do to their computers?

Mainly, because people can. It really has nothing to do with whether they game or not. I've got an i7-2600k/16gb ripjaws/sabertooth p67 mobo/ and sli 560 ti's, and I do barely any gaming at all. Most of the time these days I just browse the web and check my email, aside from when I'm writing bash/haskell/c scripts. Most graphic intensive games I play are Crysis2/mw3 and that's maybe an hour a day at most, if that.

People spend money for looks, and simply because they can. Do either have a *REAL* purpose? No.

I love Mac because it is perfect for design/workspace purposes. Stable, no issues or crashes.

I love MAC's simply because I've got a whole computer sitting on my desk that isn't much bigger than my wallet. And they're simplistic stylishness.

But that's for a different thread. tongue.giftongue.gif

I wonder what portion of the members here have only built one computer, and of those how many just asked the community what parts to get? Yes it is an enthusiast site, but there are a lot of newbs here, and some probably just bought 16GB, just in case, not knowing they would never use it in any game.

What I've seen over the years is older enthusiasts become jaded to reality, I remember people telling me all the time I'd "NEVER" fill up a 160MB HDD in my lifetime.

The fact is that as more people get larger amounts of RAM, devs will start to take advantage of it. They cater to what the average machine is, if the average doesn't move up, devs will keep things as they are.

Also everyone's argument against large amounts of RAM reminds me of the comcast CEO saying the only use for 100Mb connections is piracy.

That's the answer, you guys can debate ram usage for the next million pages however it would be a waste of time.
