I run 12 gigs of ram on my system, and i like it, since i am running a single harddrive, and back when i only had 4 gigs of ram and the "free" i.e. superfetch/caching memory ran out sometimes things would turn dreadfully slow (i.e. playing stalker call of pripyat i got slight stuttering moving through large areas). To those that might try to flame me for having 12 gigs, i have so for a reason, originally i was running 4 gigs of ram, and getting occasional bsod's from it. So i figured one of the sticks was the cause of the ram, so i bought an 8 gig kit of ram and decided to put it in, and for the hell of it try and keep my old 4 gigs of ram in (both running in dual-channel). I then went into bios and decided to attempt the xmp profiles (so the ram ran at 1600 mhz, and by raising the voltage to 1.65 (the recommended for both ram @ 1600 mhz) i managed to solve my bsod issues (which it seems were caused by insufficient voltage to the ram (which was supposedly rated for 1.5v and on 1.5v). Hence i am running 2x2gb and 2x4gb in dual-channel, and it has worked quite nicely. I can run a game like battlefield 3 and still easily alt-tab out to open up a webpage and look something up without having my harddrive chug. Also i can run and close games, and still have free to cache memory, I even set a 1gb partition to a ramdisk to find out how fast it would be and ran a speed test, i got reasonable speeds (~5 GB/s read/write speeds).

I found a good reason. I installed a Minecraft texture pack and I managed to use 3.75 GB RAM on Minecraft alone. That is why.

Not everyone uses a gaming rig for just gaming.
I work in Information Systems Security, so that means I test with virtual machines, a lot... I usually will have a handful of them up at once, and they goes chomp chomp chomp on my RAM. Now if only I had HT. hMMMMmmmm thumb.gif
