Why do gamers put 16 GB of RAM in their systems? - Page 53

Superfetch OTOH does precisely what you've described.
Oh, btw - what's the point of running multiple instances of 99.9% of games? I don't include MMORPGs, because I couldn't care less really. ONE game cannot use more than 2GB. Having 16 strictly for gaming is ridiculous.
I mean, all the cool kids are running 4 instances of BF3 while playing Batman: Arkham City on a 4th display, and FRAPsing it all, too, right?
IMO, modern CPUs/GPUs won't even run games that will (eventually) require 8-16GB of RAM.
Yeah, just think next time, why don't you. Why/who is using Photoshop while gaming? How are you managing to edit photos/videos while you're playing a FPS? And money is money, I don't care if it's 4 dollars, if it's wasteful, it's wasteful.

ay yes it was superfetch that i'd read about. i think you're right on this. i thought ready boost was just something to do with usb drives...

Well, maybe not photoshop. But say you wanted to fraps a raid in wow. In that game there is (or can be) a lot of down time. Especially if you can get away with quasi-afking during trash between bosses. You might have up...sony vegas, fraps and wow...and that's just for that. Other programs aren't inconceivable to have up as well. And if you're running 2-3 monitors (which a lot of gamers do nowadays)...it's not that much of a reach, anyway, to say that it could be useful.

EDIT: Wow, a big response form the community on this one. Let me clarify my question a little. What I meant was why do people who only game (with some minor exceptions) get 16 GB? Yes, you have all made it clear that a lot of RAM can make a difference where needed. But in gaming? You're not going to see a difference between 8 and 16 GBs of RAM. Sure, RAM is cheap, but since when has something being cheap but having zero use been an excuse to buy it? Just my opinion. Your money, and I'm not jealous you have 16 and I have 8 as all of you have pointed out, RAM is dirt cheap. biggrin.gif

I feel a strong pull to populate all my RAM slots......everytime I think about it I really really want to jump from 8GB to 16GB.
I have no reason to do so...I don't...but still I want to.

I know exactly what you mean. I just finished filling all my slots and now have 48GB - I know it doesn't really make much difference in day-to-day use, but I had the ram kicking around anyway so might as well use it.

Going to look into setting up a ram disk to use at least 32GB of it

Are you a Sagittarius and do you mind heavy drinkers? I keed. But look, there are some valid points why one shouldn't want to populate all their ram slots (in case you need to stabilize an overclock and that's getting in the way), or not wanting to waste money, or lack of need. But...I think as long as people know what those reasons are...there's no real HARM in having 16 gigs is there? I mean really? The increase in performance that one COULD see from not having 4 filled slots is small, and not universal, right? So only some people, in certain circumstances, would see a benefit from running 8 gigs (or 2x4) vs more?

I feel like making absolutes about what people should do for themselves is weird, when it's not a universal benefit.

I feel at this time having 16gb is pointless.

4gb is not enough and 8gb is the next logical step up.

The spare 8gb, from a 16gb configuration, isn't what I would call "enough" for a RAM drive...but a spare 40GB on the other hand...you could put 1-3 games on that if you were so inclined.

I agree with OP, 99% of gaming rigs don't need 8GB+ of RAM and they are either misinformed about RAM usage or it's solely for EPEEN. I'd never waste money on 16GB of RAM when I know it gives me no performance advantage, only bragging rights, but I'm logical like that, and I've found that most PC enthusiasts are not.

What about the other things that uses a lot of RAM. If you buy/build a PC solely for gaming then you are a moron. You might as well get a console and save yourself a ton of money.
