Here was my logic.

My PC is running 4gb at basically idle. Some games are pushing up to 3-4 gigs of ram now.

so that adds up to 8 gigs. For my liking that is really getting close to pushing it.

next jump on a 2011 socket is 16 gigs which is plenty but I previously had an experience where I needed more ram and the matching model wasn't around anymore.

So I figured...

a.) It's dirt cheap.

b.) Why not just max out my board with the full 32 GB so that I wouldn't have to find a matching pair 3 years down the road.

Although to level with you I do photoshop and HD video editing as a job too.

Just out of curiosity, why are you using 4gb at idle? I am currently sitting at 2GB but 600mb of that is Firefox. When I play BF3 (most demanding game for me) I start pushing closer to 5GB RAM usage, but that is it. I agree with RAM being so cheap, why not? But I definitely think people are not even utilizing half of it.

Some people like me use RAM disk, RAM Cache, VM Server, games and browsing the web at the same time. Im usually 14gb idle of my 32gb of RAM thumb.gif

I have 3 folding clients in windows, a linux vm running my i7 folding client, firefox, hfm, speedfan and windows media player ll running. My total ram usage is 2.62gigs. Plus, you put more stress on the IMC when you populate all the RAM DIMMS.

I still don't get how you are idle at 4gigs. You should track down what is using that much, you have a problem there buddy

Some people actually have a need for that much due to incredible multitasking,

But, the basis of it is because it's very cheap, some of the best ram you can buy only costs about $50 per 8gb.

Yea that makes sense, but again many of us are not doing that, though if I had 16GB RAM, I definitely would have at least a 4GB RAM drive.

On the one hand, I feel like 8GB is more than enough for gaming. My old C2D rig runs 6GB, and I've never had memory issues.

On the other hand, I just checked my work laptop, and I'm using 3.75 / 4GB, just with Chrome (lots of tabs) and vSphere client (1 console session open), and it is so slow I can barely use it. Chrome itself is using 2.7GB. So 4GB on my laptop is not enough, and I only see this getting worse in the future as websites get bigger and more robust. If building a new computer, and the price difference is pretty small, why not go for 16GB now so you don't have to worry about upgrading later? Besides, motherboards tend to not be as happy with all 4 slots filled, which is a reason to go for 2x8 vs 4x4.

I've always wondered why. 8GB is plenty in the first place.

Ram is dirt cheap
I use a lot of VMs
Photoshop

For gaming 8GB should be more than enough
