Sold my 4870x2 - Buyer Having Problems

Thread Starter
So, I sold my 4870x2 on ebay a few weeks ago around Thanksgiving.
The buyer has 100 positive reviews, but location said Sri Lanka so I was very... worried at first. I gave the benefit of the doubt when the address was in California apartment.

Didn't hear a word from the buyer other than my shipping delivery confirmation since then. Now, a month has passed, and I get contacted. He has a problem.

there is a problem in this card. i just sent my machine to tech and check. all this days i thought it was my motherboard. pls give me a solution for this.

Dear kalolakaushal,

What exactly is the problem you're experiencing with the card? You sent your machine to a tech? What was their diagnosis?

they said problem with the card. other cards works fine. issue is there are some lines going on when it plugs to pc

Dear kalolakaushal,

What do you mean there are some lines going on when you power it on?

I need a little more detail to help.
What is your power supply rated? As in, how much wattage does it have.

- omeganemesis2822
Quote:
yes i bought a brand new 750w power supply also. when i power it on it gives me display with some lines blinking.

- kalolakaushal
Quote:
Dear kalolakaushal,

So upon powering the card on, your display shows lines and nothing else?
Does the card emit any beeping sounds?
Are you positive both power cords to the card are firmly plugged in?
Are you using DVI to connect to the card? Tried both ports?
Does the fan on the card spin up?

Did the card ever work since you recieved it?

Im just going through standard troubleshooting, sorry for so many questions.
The card worked great for me before I sent it out. Never had a problem before. Very odd.

- omeganemesis2822

Dear omeganemesis2822,

yes i can see the pictures hardly with blinking lines

and sometimes its got stuck with beep sound

i have checked its correctly plugged

i try'd with dvi port first so i thought its maybe fault with converter but later i try'd with dvi direct cable but its not worked.

yes fan is working fine.

ever since i received it it gave me same issue and i try'd to rectify it.

i really need this card to work. coz i spent more than $100 dollars to power supply and casing. pls try to understand me

Thanks
Kaushal

Dear kalolakaushal,

I understand, do not worry Im going to try to help the best I can.

So you can see picture but it has lines? This is where Im getting confused its hard to help not knowing what exactly the problem is.
Are you able to see the BIOS and such when you turn on the computer but just with lines or can you not see anything but lines completely?
Have you tried other PCI-E ports on the motherboard? They are the slots the card plugs into.

- omeganemesis2822

Dear omeganemesis2822,

yes i can see bios but with lines. i checked everything on bios.

- kalolakaushal
Quote:
Dear kalolakaushal,

I'm assuming you have Windows installed? Try booting into Safe Mode of Windows and just check to see if the lines persist.

Another thing I would like to know is what power supply you have. What brand, and if possible, model it is so I can look it up and see the ampage it is supplying.

The power cords that you are plugging into the card - are they the standard 8 pin and 6 pin or are you using a converter for them?

Is it possible for you to take a picture of the problem and another of the card installed in the computer so maybe I can spot something amiss.

- omeganemesis2822

Dear kalolakaushal,

Ok. I'm reading online that issues like these are surprisingly common but can happen for many reasons.

When you said " i installed windows using another vga card and checked but same issue" - is the other vga card having the same problem or only the 4870x2? The 4870x2 can go into Windows but still have the lines?

Sorry for being repetitious, but are you positive that BOTH (two) power supply cables are secured on the card? There are 2 cables needed - 8 pin and 6 pin. I read online that someone had not connected the 6 pin and it had lines on their screen.

Also, if possible - I meant to ask this in the other message - which motherboard make/model are you using? While it looks like the card can be the problem, if the motherboard has a Crossfire (multi GPU) compatibility issue that can be the cause. The 4870x2 is a dual GPU card in one.

I'm trying really hard to help resolve the problem. Sorry for all the questions.
May I also inquire why you only just found out about the problem now and have only asked now? It's been a month since I sold it to you.
Your location is Sri Lanka on Ebay but I shipped the card to a US address. Are you currently in the US or Sri Lanka? I only ask because of the time difference.

Dear omeganemesis2822,

i installed windows using 8500gt card it worked perfectly. i thought of problem with PSU so i asked tech support team to change the motherboard(Intel 41w) and well as PSU unit. i am pretty sure nothing wrong with PSU. and my system is intel core 2 quad gigabyte motherboard 4gb ram. 500gb hdd. il send u a picture of all setup.

and yes it is almost 3weeks now since i bought this item. us address is my uncles address. i ask you to ship there coz he planed to visit srilanka 17th December and i ask him to bring the card with him, that will cut of some shipping charges. technically i got the card 18th December and ever since i got it i never thought it was card issue coz i loved it the weight and design. so all thz days i've try'd to rectify it. dats y it too so long.

main reason i bought this card and build this machine for play call of duty MW 3 (lol)

- kalolakaushal

I just cant think of why he would have a problem.

I used to have a problem with the card where it would overheat during gameplay and crash the computer - but I found out the problem was my waterblock and had improper contact on the components.
I fixed this problem by going back to the stock aircooler and used it for months without a problem. Then I upgraded to the 6990 and didn't look back.

I tried the card again before I sold it to double check. I was able to play Battlefield 3 for 2 solid hours without a problem. Then I shipped it straight from there. The shipping was pretty solid too. I can't imagine why he's having problems. I hate troubleshooting video cards.

Think maybe I should instruct him to try doing a BIOS flash on the card? I mean, I can't think of anything else.

EDIT:
http://www.techpowerup.com/forums/showthread.php?t=82390

Wow - look at that someone sold their 4870x2 and same problem, everything lol
I don't really want to be the one RMA the card.

EDIT2:
Quote:
Dear kalolakaushal,

I see. I figured it was something like that. It really complicates things. I feel bad about the card not working properly.
I have a feeling something happened on your uncle's trip with the card. It was fully functional when I had it and it never displayed odd behavior before, and I cant seem to pinpoint what the problem is. I've been asking around online for help, but everything is pointing to a dead card.

Has the card been tried in another motherboard or computer at all?

If you want to try, you can flash the video card BIOS on both GPUs and see if that helps. A quick google search of "flash 4870x2 BIOS" would explain in sufficient detail but will require the right BIOS files which I can provide if you wish.

I could also give you the invoice, and perhaps try to help you RMA the card. Problem is, the whole outside-US messes that up even more.

- omeganemesis2822

That was 2 days ago and no response back.

Ask to get a picture of the lines he's talking about. I've had to deal with people before that made up fake problems and would demand partial refunds, while the product still worked fine. I'm not saying he's lying, its just always good to check.

Yeah I smell him asking for a refund a mile away.

I mean, if I bought something off of ebay and it had a problem, I'd demand a refund too. But the fact that it's been a month and this is the first I've heard about it troubles me.
I feel bad for the guy and want to help.

I'd offer the refund but the hassle of the refund and worrying about the shipping, yadda yadda. And if I get the card and it really doesn't work then I'm screwed.

If you could ask him to boot into Safe Mode and see if it still happens then something is related to the card. If not, and it only happens in Windows normal mode, it is related to graphics drivers.

Faulty drivers is a very likely scenario. I've had this "lines" issue with my old 4670 AGP.
If the buyer proves his issues to be genuine and the card works fine in safe mode, advise him to use Driver Sweeper to remove all traces of any installed video drivers (mayhaps he even has some nvidia leftovers?) and then get the latest drivers from AMD.

EDIT: Didn't notice the "lines in BIOS" part. Well, cleaning the drivers is still worth a shot for the time being, I guess.

It's happening even when POST, BIOS menu and everything. I don't think its driver related sadly. I will ask anyway though.

It's been a month and a bit. I'd probably say send it back to me so I can test it out. If there is a problem or not, I'd just refund. What bugs me is that it's been awhile since he's had the card for testing, then asks about now.

He should pay to ship it back to you.

Oh, right, ask for his motherboard model. It could be using some weird chipset and/or dislike crossfire/dual GPU cards.

This is how i see it.

If i bought a 100dollar card and it didn't work i would immediately contact the buyer.
1st. As he said "ever since i received it it gave me same issue and i try'd to rectify it." is kinda a worry. You have no idea what he has done to it.

2nd. Why would you first try to fix it yourself and then you take it to a computer repair shop and they say its the video card thats the problem. And clearly with not much experience this guy then claims that he went and got a psu to try to fix it. Any decent repair shop would surely have tried a different psu. So with all that i doubt he got a bigger psu AFTER he went to the repair shop.

3rd: He spent 100dollars on a psu and case, is this even possible to get a psu and a case for ~100dollars?

4th. I have a borked 4870x2 that has the same issues as this card. My problem came from overheating and one of the processors died or semi died. Had lines everywhere and worked in windows as long as it was res 800*600 or less. Was almost impossible to install drivers even if device manager recognised both processors. got rid of the lines by baking but not the driver or resolution issues.

5th. This is my educated guess whats happened. Seeming he bought a new case and psu after he got the card, im assuming that the case he had before was quite small and possibly the psu wasn't enough. He installed it in his computer case which was too small --> not enough air flow--> over heats-->borked the card-->buys a new case + psu-->no luck-->repair shop-->no luck-->contacts you for a last try to get his money back from his own screw up.

I would politly tell him that he should have contacted you as soon as he got it if it wasn't workin, just even if it was to let you know and how to proceed. In a months time there are so many things he can have done to it so i wouldn't take it back. nor would i give a refund for something i sold a month ago that clearly was working when u sent it.
Would you wait a month if the gpu you bought was broken from day one? i would not
