Not really helping here , but my 4870x2 died the same way that dude described it.
The cause was , running a furmark bench on stock clocks.

This is a vid I made. (sorry for the low quality)

Let him know u need a video of when he restarts the computer with your card. If u then decide that u will grant him a refund, make sure u test the card before that and let him know that if it works that there will be no refund and that he needs to pay shipping again.
Whatever u do i think no one would blame you if u don't do anything about it. He has had enough time to contact u but haven't

The entire line of 4870x2 cards were / are extremely finicky, I have no idea why but it may just be a totally random failure that neither one of you two could have seen coming. Then again, it could have been the scenario that Ace laid out as well.
To just add another scenario to the mix, you originally said he was from Sri Lanka but with a Cali apartment, could it be it was sent to a friend or relative, tested (found working properly), repackaged poorly, then sent to the original buyer? The only reason I even offer this is because of the way his responses utilize such...broken English for a lack of better words. :/
Hope it all works out smile.gif

That's just it.
I tend to foolishly assume the better of people. It's gotten me into problems before, and I usually end up losing. I still like to think better of people regardless, but this one I just don't know.

I easily see this being a legit problem. I feel bad about it, and am leaning toward refunding the money. Plenty of people have this problem, the card just dies. The only thing to do is RMA it and hope for the best.
But, the whole month is a big ass inconsistency. I wish he would've just contacted me 2 weeks ago. It just doesn't feel right. It never did from the beginning. I'm surprised I went through with the same to begin with. The Sri Lanka thing was a big question mark.

I am going to ask him about his location. Where he is currently - whether in Cali or Sri Lanka and what that whole business is about. Maybe a bit personal, but its obviously necessary unless I straight up tell him no. I'll also ask about the month delay in response.

This is the problem with today's society. So many loops to get your problems fixed. What happened to the good old days when a seller would actually go straight to the point and fix the issue? Once people get your money it is very difficult to actually get it back or get a working product. So many 'call centre' questions that detract from the larger picture : people do not care about the buyer after a product has been sold; even more so when they come back that the product is faulty.

I have been in the buyer's situation more times than I can think of and I am disgusted at this whole 'suspicion' mentality where it is guilty until proven innocent and not the other way around. In any case, if your auction did not specify 'do not accept returns' you need to fix it. No loops, no dodging, no 'have you tried safe mode' ideas.

Nope , sadly I couldn't fix it.

I tried :

Using some other drivers
Using an other PCI-E slot
Using other mobo
Using an other PSU
Clean it and replace the TIM

And there where no prior symptoms. It just failed randomly I guess.

You could always offer to return half of his money, since while it was working when you sold it, it died or messed up later, and you were the owner that had it longer, so logic would dictate(due to the symptoms and other things posters have said) there was more stress on your end, than his.

I would be straight to the point and refund it but the whole month is a massive question mark. You must admit it. It's not necessarily a problem with society at all. This is how any sale or trade would go.

and "have you tried safe mode" ideas are just standard troubleshooting steps. You may have been in the buyer's situation plenty, but I've been countless situations where there really isn't a problem to start. The problem is something ridiculously stupid like "oh, the plug wasn't in all the way" or something overlooked.
And if you've truly been in the buyer's position, then I'm inclined to say that you're in the wrong here because it took you a month to respond.

As for whether or no I specified 'do not accept returns' :
Ebay automatically applies the return policy of: "The buyer has 7 days to return the item (the buyer pays shipping fees). The item will be refunded." to all sales now.

In fact, I do not believe they even let you say "no returns" anymore. It's apart of their new Ebay buyer protection program thats been retooled to protect buyers. Almost to the point of stupid.
For example, ebay will not give you the money payment until you ship the item to the customer WITH tracking. Once the item is delivered, and there are no problems within 2 days of tracking saying it was delivered, then you get the funds. If you don't do tracking, you have to wait 2 weeks to get the money from Paypal.
That whole program is BRUTAL for sellers. I've never been comfortable parting with something unless I have the money in hand before. Not to mention, it puts the seller at a total disadvantage with Paypal disputes heaven forbid something goes wrong because the buyer can easily make a getaway with the item sold within the time gap.

Here's my opinion regarding that. I sold an asus rampage on here. Shortly after the buyer received it, I inquired about Trader Rep. See, when I buy something used from anyone, as soon as I get it, I will make sure all is working fine, and then rep, or give feedback. That way, if there are any issues, they can hopefully be resolved sooner rather than later.

So he had mentioned he hadn't set it up yet, and I just for got about it. However, if he were to contact me a month later and say there were issues, I'd basically tell him tough luck. While I know my rep or feedback may suffer, and in the case of some paypal/ebay experiences where the seller gets royally ripped off happen. But I would be able to stand by my morals/ethics honestly. So, do what you feel is best. Aren't all sales of used items as-is?

and "have you tried safe mode" ideas are just standard troubleshooting steps.

I bought a laptop off EBAY brand new from New York. It took 3 weeks to arrive and after 1 week, the GPU died (faulty Nvidia chip). I contacted the seller after a month and he was suspicious the way you are. Long story short I ended up suing ASUS HOLLAND for keeping my laptop 2 months with them and not fixing it.

In any case, do what you wish and tell the guy that it is too late for fixing it. This seems to be the consensus around here.

Did I miss the part in the convo between you and him as to when did he actually get hold of the card? Was it shipped from the US to his place by an intermediary?
