e6400 needs some OC help

Ok, I work for a municipality, and I talked them into letting me build a "vista-capable" PC. Now this is public sector, so they will nickel and dime me to death.

THis is what they let me buy:

Gigabyte GA-945PL-S3
Core 2 Duo e6400
BFG 256mb 7300 GT OC
Ultra Xfinity 500 watt PSU

THis is what i scrapped together

80 gb seagate ide drive
dvd-cdrw
big, old antec case
pulled 4x256mb micron 200mhz ddr2 ram from 4 dell desktops in the library

Now obviously my big problem is ram: keeping the budget in mind, what should I get? Can I make this ram work?

attached is my current "overclock" (up to a whopping 2ghz stable)... please advise as to better settings for this ram

That ram will work...it will suck, but as long as it's DDR2 then it will go.

However, I would suggest a Corsair or Patriot or OCZ or G.Skill 1GB kit (2x512mb sticks) to get more out of that rig.

They aren't TOO steep either.

Any of these will work fine on a budget:
Corsair: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820145566
Patriot: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820220070
G.Skill: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820231064
OCZ: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Produc...82E16820227077

Hope This helps...

Yes, 1GB is definately enough for Vista.

Especially since you won't be using the machine for gaming... Your more faulty component in there is the 7300GT because it doesnt support DX10, which Vista will use.

No current card will run with DX10. However, there will most likely be a dumbed down version of Vista to remain compatible with DX9 cards. And your best choice would be a card similar to the 7300-series GeForce's just to tide you over until they release DX10 next year.

And you can OC this system, your GPU will have NO effect on how much you can OC your 6400. Just be sure to get a good heatsink fan and make sure you have decent airflow.
