New at Overclocking

Thread Starter
I'm relatively new to overclocking, but I've been reading up on it for a couple days now. So please excuse the lack of knowledge. Here's my setup, it's rather old:

Abit NF7-S2G
(BIOS rev. 15)
AthlonXP Barton 2600+ 1.15GHz
(locked multiplier x11.5)
Thermalright SLK-900A
512MB DDR400 RAM
(2x Buffalo 256MB, CL2.5, NonECC, Unbuffered, Dual Channel)
ATI Radeon X700
350W Antec PSU

My BIOS settings don't exactly seem to be overclocking friendly... kinda hard to describe. Computer currently running at default settings after clearing CMOS. I set the BIOS to expert mode and started to increase the FSB Frequency up to 133MHz. The computer can boot up and load windows, but after a certain amount of time or hitting a certain amount of cpu load, mthe computer randomly shuts itself off. I'm not sure exactly what's causing this problem as nothing in my computer seems to be overheating. MBM5 shows that the comp is running at 46C at 133MHz. I read that vCore should be used when the FSB is high enoguh that the CPU ceases to boot properly, but I decided to increase it 0.25V just to check. The problem is that the BIOS only allows you to increase the vCore by increments in percentages, the only options being +6%, +12%, and +18%. It seems that +12% doesn't allow the computer to boot. The computer still turned itself off after a certain amount of time.

I'm not exactly sure why it's not letting me run the cpu underclocked stably at 133MHz even though everything else on the comp seems to be working fine at a relatively cool temperature. Even at 133Mhz, the comp runs at 1.53Ghz and before my recent reformat, I remember it running at 1.9~GHz from a previous overclock.

Thanks for all the help in advance.

Correct me if im wrong but should'nt the multiplier be at 12.5 and the FSB at 166?
Yeah im right 2600+ should be a 2087mhz or there abouts

Ok this is what it should be at stock
Athlon XP 2600+: Barton, 512KB L2, 1917MHz, 333MHz FSB

Hmm, well when I clear the CMOS, the BIOS says it's running at 1.15GHz and the FSB is at 100, so the multiplier would be locked at 11.5. Unless I've got the wrong cpu name... I'm sure it's a Barton though and it seems Bartons were produced around 2400+, and even then it should have a stock speed of > 1.15GHz.

Yeah that is right 11.5, just change your fsb to 166 thta should put you right
After a cmos reset it will change it to 100fsb but it should be 166

Keep me posted with your result
I had the same cpu as you before this one and the same thing happen to me

I just restarted and set the FSB to 166 and after that, the computer wouldn't even boot. The monitor would turn on and show the AbitBIOS screen and the computer would turn itself off almost immediately.

I read that 166 mhz x 11.5 is the default setting for this cpu. However it runs (Seemingly) very stable with no trouble.
This is what it say off the official AMD forum site

Have you locked your agp/pci to 66
And what mhz is your ram running at?

I checked the voltage for the cpu on cpu-z and it said it was running at around 1.664V. As for the ram, what about it am I supposed to adjust?

How do I check if the agp/pci is locked to 66? I checked the BIOS and the only AGP related options was the voltage and a section talking about aperture size, 8x support, and fast write capability (128M, Enabled, and Enabled, respectively). I did find an option called CPU Thermal-Throttling which is at 50%. Not sure if that has to do with any of my problems. As for the RAM, it's running at 200MHz.
