I would get a PCIe 3.0 board, this will allow you to upgrade the CPU if ever needed.
I can recommend the ASUS P8Z68-V PRO/GEN3
[200$] MB. Other than that I've also read good things about the ASRock Z68 Extreme4/Extreme7 GEN3.CPU
Socket 1155 CPUs offer the best performance for your money atm.
I would go with an i5 2500K
[220$] or an i7 2600K
[300$] if you intend to run applications that benefit from hyperthreading.Graphics card
Since it's the most important part for gaming, I would get a GTX 580. I can't recommend the 7970 because nobody really knows when there will be non-reference versions. I wouldn't buy a reference card, because it gets hotter and is way more noisy than a dual fan design card.
My recommendation would be an ASUS GTX 580 DCII
[500$] or a MSI GTX 580 Lightning, but I can't find it on Newegg.
Overall that would be 920$ (or exactly 1000$ with a 2600K) and you should be set for a while.
