Moving Windows 7 from Hard Drive To SSD

Thread Starter
Hi guys, I know how to move windows 7 from the hard drive to the ssd, but my only question is that once windows 7 is on the ssd when all my programs load from the hard drive will I have to reinstall them? I know this might seem to be a stupid question but I have not found an answer anywhere. Thanks

Ive already looked at his guide, I didn't see anything there that would suggest that they would not be uninstalled

Yeah, my ssd is not big enough to accommodate all of my data. I just want the Os in the ssd, I want all of the Data to be loaded on the HD
post #6 of 8
I would recommend just installing windows on it. I had to do the same. It much eaiser install fresh windows.

Unplug your current drive
Install windows on the ssd
plug in other drive
copy stuff over

ok, well something for sean to add or explain better lol smile.gif

so you want the OS on the SSD and keep your programs on the HDD thus they would now be on a differnt drive letter, i would say before you HDD was C/ and now you SSD is C/ and your HDD is something like D/ ??? am i understand you correctlly? if its just data on your hDD then no problem

there quite posibly is an easy way to keep your programes on the HDD than reinstall them, but maybe you might have too. see what other people say smile.gif

Your preinstalled programs on your old installation will not work on the new installation most of the time due to the programs files and data being tied into the OS registry.

Anyways it is still better to have the programs reinstalled onto the SSD. Just back up your data on the HDD and format it or delete the OS partition on it with the system reserve partition after you move important data on a new partition.
