Upgrading from DT 770's and need help...

Well although I really love my cans I have to replace a driver on the left side. Since I listen to everything exclusively on my headphones before I can have them repaired I have to buy a new set of cans or no video gaming, TV or movies for the next month or so.

First off I went to listen to some cans today and only the 880 Pros are in the stratosphere I am considering and they were nohwere what I like or want. I actually came away reliving why I love the DT 770's so much, and am actuall listening to them right now as I type this.

Overall some of the qualities I am looking for in my new set of cans is something that has authoritative but more controlled bass than the 770's. The bass is plenty but a little overemphasized and at times a little 'sloppy'. I want clearer more emphasized mid ranges, and airier highs with a better overall sound-stage.

So far based on reviews ( haven't listened to these yet) I am considering the Denon ADH 2000s, Ultrasone 900's, Beyerdymanic 990 Premiums 250 ohms. I'm looking for cans probably 350 and below. I just saw the Ultrasone 900's at $312 on Amazon and they sold out and went to $500. I am now wondering if I really missed out. I prefer closed headphones btw but am open to open if there is not tons of sound leakage. I will be playing BF3 late and do not want explosions waking up anyone... lolz

I will be using the new set for everything including gaming, as well as TV and movie watching and music listening.

Thank you for the help my OCN buddies!

I am also considering the Denon ADH 5000's if they come down to the mid or low 300's.
How do these compare to their little brother 2000's???

As a owner of both Ultrasone Pro 900's and Beyerdymanic 990 (600 ohm), I'd have to say the Ultrasone are more enjoyable as a pair of headphones, but out of the box the highs were horrendous (very digital and sharp) but after burning them in for about 40 hours that went away.

The Beyers were more analytical and a little more comfortable but are open and leak sound. They also did a lot better with vocals and with some rock I prefer wearing them. So it depends on what music you listen to more (Movie wise, the Ultrasone were awesome).

I'm running strait through my Titanium HD.
I'm leaning more toward either the Denon 2000 or 5000...

I wouldn't go higher than a D2000 unless you plan on getting a good amp immediately. The Denon series benefits greatly from an amp and can actually be ruined by not using one. Other cheaper cans will sound better straight through a DAC. The Titanium is fine for now though. Really, if u don't plan on amp yet, don't spend more than the D2000 and only if you want to purchase an amp in the future. Once you've entered the audiophile world, you can't go back.

If you really don't plan on going audiophile, consider the lower priced Sennheisers or these others: HD 595, HD25, Beyerdynamic DT1350, ATH-A900s, ATH-AD700s, AKG 240s, Grado 200 series.

The D2000 is a great recommendation. It certainly would benefit from an amp, look at solid state amps such as matrix v2 to get solid, controlled bass.
Almost all of the higher end headphones mentioned in this thread require an amp for the most part. You can choose to NOT use an amp with the D2000s, but it's strongly recommended that you buy one. A tube amp actually works better for the D2000s than a SS amp (personal preference, but a lot of people feel this way).

This is something to consider though. You tried the DT880s, but the 80 ohm pro version. The DT880 600 ohm version is a completely different beast. It's bass is controlled where as the Pro version is not. It's open and airy. Quite analytical and very sharp/crisp sounding. From your explanation of what you wanted, I thought the DT880s 600 were the perfect headphones, but of course, you need an amp. So yeah, I would really suggest getting an amp if you want to move up the chain.
