5870 - Can't seem to disable powerplay

post #1 of 25
Thread Starter
I like to watch Media Center while playing some games, and PowerPlay takes my clock from 850 down to 400. I've done all kinds of things to disable this..."feature"...but I haven't gotten anything to work.

Things I've tried:
- MSI Afterburner. No matter what "unofficial" settings I change, I cannot lock the core speed at any speed.
- AMD Overdrive. Any changes here drop the 2d speed from 400mhz to 157mhz. If I go back to 850 it goes up to 400mhz again.
- BIOS. If I change any other setting in the BIOS the card works fine, but if I try to change the UVD clock or memory AT ALL, whenever UVD activates my system blue screens. I've changed the voltage registers, and this seems to "stick", but still causes bluescreens.

I have the 12.1 preview drivers now, but in the past couple hours I've had 11.11,11.12 and 12.1 installed all with the same results.

Hi there.

You will need to create and modify a profile/preset within CCC. I recommend you update to the latest drivers as well and keep them there.

Once you have created the preset, you can edit the lower end settings for your clocks. You can set them to something reasonable. This also fixes flickering with multiple monitors if you have ever had that issue.

In Windows Vista/7, the profile is placed in “C:\Users\Your Windows ID\AppData\Local\ATI\ACE\Profiles\”
In Windows XP, you will find the XML profile file in “C:\Documents and Settings\Your Windows ID\Local Settings\Application Data\ATI\ACE\Profiles\”.

Once you have created a new preset, check there. Look through the file and you'll see your clock speeds. Modify the lower ones to something a bit higher (maybe 400/600 for example) and save the file. Load from the preset again in CCC and this should fix it.

The only other way to fix this to my knowledge is flashing the bios of the card, which I haven't actually tried yet - supposed to be able to change the base idle/2d clocks that way as well.

Looks like you haven't set your clock speeds at all.

Turn on overdrive and set them to something other than stock - then you should have the fields in your profile to edit.

Ok yeah you're right. So now what happens is it's always at max clock speed...except if UVD gets activated, then it drops to 400 mhz.
Code:
<Group name="Overdrive5">
        <Feature name="TimeUnlocked" />
        <Feature name="OverclockEnabled">
          <Property name="OverclockEnabledProperty" value="True" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="AutoTuneSupport" />
        <Feature name="CoreClockTarget_0">
          <Property name="Want_0" value="85500" />
          <Property name="Want_1" value="85500" />
          <Property name="Want_2" value="85500" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="PowerControl_0">
          <Property name="Want" value="0" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="MemoryClockTarget_0">
          <Property name="Want_0" value="120000" />
          <Property name="Want_1" value="120000" />
          <Property name="Want_2" value="120000" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="CoreVoltageTarget_0">
          <Property name="Want_0" value="1125" />
          <Property name="Want_1" value="1125" />
          <Property name="Want_2" value="1125" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="MemoryVoltageTarget_0">
          <Property name="Want_0" value="0" />
          <Property name="Want_1" value="0" />
          <Property name="Want_2" value="0" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="FanSpeedProtocol_0">
          <Property name="FanSpeedProtocolProperty" value="Percent" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="FanSpeedAlgorithm_0">
          <Property name="FanSpeedAlgorithm" value="Automatic" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="FanSpeedRPMTarget_0">
          <Property name="Want" value="0" />
        </Feature>
        <Feature name="FanSpeedPercentTarget_0">
          <Property name="Want" value="50" />
        </Feature>
      </Group>

Edit: With a combination of this and Afterburner, UVD causes the driver to just crash and reset.
Edit 2: Doesn't require Afterburner. With this set, the driver crashes or bluescreens 9/10 times. The tenth time nothing crashes but the clock changes anyway.
Edit 3: If I activate that profile now the screen turns grey and the graphics card never comes back. On top of that, the default clocks put 2d mode at 157 mhz, which causes my monitors to flicker anytime the mouse moves.
Edit 4: Had to disable overdrive completely to get system stability back. Wish I knew what was going on...

You simply go to the Video Player then disable "Hardware Acceleration". Don't mess with UVD clocks unnecessarily and that will not solve your BSODs. Just disable hardware acceleration.

go to youtube ..open a video ..and right click it..i don't think that'll solve your problem,though..download rivatuner..which driver version are you using?..IMO ..11.2-3 is best for 5870..whichever one is JUST AFTER the one that makes your screen "shimmy" @ startup.btw..the youtube thing is a MUST to prevent bsods..gotta be quick on the draw..sometimes it takes several tries..pick a video that has high lag..lol
