Same here. I never got into the whole HL series. It wasn't from a lack of trying though. At first, I played 1 and 2 both at least half way through and still couldn't like them. I kept waiting for these, very much hyped, games to "get good" but they never did. I did finally play them both through, but it was forced and out of boredom. Admittedly I played them well after they were released(steam package sale, years after release), so that may have had a big impact on why I felt this way about them. Though if that was the case, I probably wouldn't have liked portal since I played it well after it was released too(free weekend deal about a year ago) and subsequently, Portal 2. I loved both of those and still play them ever so often. Amazing games.

Someone said earlier they wished they would have worked on HL more and not made stupid games like Portal. I feel the exact opposite. Everyone is different though, and Valve knows this. I trust that they will work on several different types of games and not focus and pin all their hopes on a single one, like some would want.

You know it won't so why set yourself up? Even the most skillfully crafted games succumb to the perils of being hyped to holy hell. Look at GT5.

i second this, look at the time span between HL1 and HL2 . HL1 hit the game scene in 1991, Blue Shift and OPFOR hit in late 92/ early 93.

take the time span between OPFOR/Blue Shift and HL2, and make that about what it will be for HL3.

far as it goes, for those of you who couldnt get into HL1/HL2, they arent going to make it into COD/ BF, half life is more about the story than killing things, alot of us enjoy that storyline, its what made HL1/HL2 popular in the first place.

Hmmm ? No, Half-Life was released in 1998; Valve used a heavily modified Quake engine (released in 1996) which they called GoldSrc. You have all your timeline wrong.

I agree with the storytelling, it's what makes these games special. But Valve knows it can't live off of one game genre forever and that is why it has released and is releasing different genres; it knows it can't please everybody with a single one, and it naturally wants to be recognized for doing great games in other genres too - and they have and will learn useful things from those experiences that they can later apply in subsequent games.

i have the original game box and disc that says copyright 1991 -.-

the game was edited and re-released in '98 because people felt it was too long.

the edited version is what you can purchase on steam.

either way, its still a timespan of more than 4 years, so why complain?

That is impossible. In 1991 you didn't even have hardware capable enough to run a 3d game properly. Wolfenstein 3d is from that time and it is not even a true 3d game (technically speaking), as John Carmack already said once.

Again, what you are saying is impossible. I reiterate what I said, Half-Life was released in 1998, using a heavily modified Quake engine. Valve called it the GoldSrc engine. Quake was released in 1996. Valve re-released Half-Life in 2004 using the Source engine, a few months before releasing Half-Life 2.

In 1991 Valve didn't even exist! And Gabe Newell was a Microsoft employee back then.

You are blatantly wrong. Go inform yourself.

Half-Life was based off Quake II code iirc. How can Half-Life be released before Quake I?

iD was still making Doom and Wolfenstein3D back in 1991.

Half-Life used OpenGL since iD games used OpenGL. There were no OpenGL games in 1991. It was all about Voodoo 3dfx Glide in the mid-1990s.
