Extending a network? - Page 2

I see now. There is a way but it may be complicated. Mainly you need a wireless repeater, but I don't know any that come with a switch so you can connect with wires. Now there is a way if you get a router with 2 radio bands and that supports ddwrt then that would work as ddwrt can be set up as a wireless repeater and still connect your pc with wires.

This was typed by by my phone so I'm not sure if it came out clear enough but should still point you in the right direction.

Well if you get a repeater with ethernet ports it will be like wireless on the ethernet ports wont it? Because the repeater is receiving signal wirelessly and then you would be plugging ethernet cables into that.

I don't understand why someone hasn't recommended a strong wireless N router that will reach down/up stairs, then turn off the modems wireless function and use it purely as a modem. Would require NO setup other than turning the modems wireless off.

yes that is called a wireless bridge but what he wants is to also expand the wireless while still connecting his desktop by wire.

your missing the point. he wants it wireless between point A and point B and having his desktop connected by wire to point B device while device B expands the wireless coverage.

Then add both a Wireless N router downstairs and a switch in his room. Can be done in the US for under $100 easily, I would assume less in Europe.

Nick

EDIT: Better yet, using just a strong wireless N router in your room would give you the Switch/Wireless signal needed for the entire house and it would give you 4 ports in your room, problem solved thumb.gif

EDIT2: Here are some possible solutions!

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122326
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833314053
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16833122334

Depending on what you're looking to spend these all offer gigabit ethernet x4 and wireless N at 300 Mbps or higher. Wireless N on these routers should be amplified plenty to penetrate with full signal 3 floors!

Thread Starter
I see, so the idea of extending the wireless range isn't really available :\ or at least it may be but it may cost me more or be more annoying to set up.

So I guess if I got a wireless switch / router / whatever then the device could choose the signal that is strongest? I dunno I guess I'm just thinking into it too much.

My question is; my PC has content on it (movies and you know... other things you acquire over the years... word documents and the such ;p) if I have 2 wireless signals on the same network but the device connects via the Home hub will I still be able to access said content? smile.gif

BTW thanks for the help so far guys :\ didn't think I'd have to draw it to make sense but I guess that's how I was describing it =[

EDIT: What I'll be doing is as I have described but:
  • Using the Xbox to watch videos off my PC, go on Xbox Live, downloading demos and such & multiplayer
  • Using the PC for internet games and other general PC stuff
  • Using wireless for my iPhone, laptop etc.

Any advice appreciated =]

imo i think your just over thinking/describing everything.

if this is truely what you want int he pic below there is 2 ways of doing this.

1) the wireless device in your room thing should be just a regular switch with a 2nd device called an "access point". you would take the line that has been ran into your room plug it into the switch and from there plug your xbox and pc in to that as long with the "access point". you will need a minimum 4-port switch. you then from there set up the access point exactly how you did with the modem/router your isp gave you. i.e. same ssid and password. leave the channel to something 6 away. like if the router is on channel 1 the access point should be on 6.

2) get any half decent router and set the wireless up the same way and plug in the same way but DON'T USE THE WAN PORT ON THE BACK. also disable the DHCP feature of it.

Again I'm not sure why we're doing all of this Switch + Router + Wireless Access Point. He needs a simple Wireless router with a 4 port switch built-in, common in every router now, and the wireless needs to reach all floors.

Get one of the routers I suggested or something similar and instead of plugging the long ethernet cord from downstairs into your computer have it plug into the the new router that will be next to your computer giving you 3 extra ports for the Xbox and other assorted wired products, while still giving wireless to the entire home from your room. I'm not sure why we would be extending a wireless N signal when it's not needed, any of the routers I listed should be more than strong enough to cover an entire house and give you wireless internet in your neighbors home...

Your Wireless combo modem/router will be acting as just a modem as you will turn off the wireless feature which should be just a few button clicks.

Nick

EDIT: "Your Wireless combo modem/router will be acting as just a modem as you will turn off the wireless feature which should be just a few button clicks." <
THIS is an important step, by doing this you make the new wireless router be the only network in the home, wired and wireless. This will let you be in a single network allowing streaming of videos, files, audio, pictures, etc... This should NOT be hard to setup, the hardest thing you will need to do is turn OFF the "Hub's" Wireless. Once that is done by plugging in the router into the Ethernet cable that is being ran from downstairs the router should auto-configure itself as needed. If you need security, a new Network ID, or any tables/routing done then that's a few "extra" steps that are not required in your situation!
