`Please suggest a mic for me (simply for Skype and gaming)

I ordered a Zalman clip-on mic a while ago and I've been having problems with it not picking up my voice every now and then. I got tired of it today and plugged in my old Creative headset, which worked like a charm right away. Since I don't want to keep using the Creative headset but need a mic regardless, I'm looking for something that's not that Zalman.

Another clip-on mic would be nice, bearing in mind that the cable of my headphones (ATH-AD700) is pretty thick. I could also settle for a regular desktop mic. Anyway, like I mentioned, this is just for Skype and gaming. I don't do any music recording or anything fancy, my needs are very basic in that department. It will be plugged in directly to the mic port of my X-Fi Titanium HD in case that matters.

What do you suggest that's cheap, reliable and compact? Something with a thicker cable than the Zalman would be nice, but not a priority at all.

Thanks!

Having destroyed several headsets over the last couple years I've been using the mic built into my microsoft HD5000 webcam. Imo it's pure win. Will never go back to a desktop or headset mic again.

It might not really fit within your criteria, but the Logitech USB Mic is usually praised for having pretty good sound quality, durability, and can pick up voices far and well.

I'm surprised the Zalman didn't work for you. Many praise it.

How about the steelseries microphone? I've had it and it picks up voice nicely even 3 feet away. On newegg, it seems to only come with the earphones.

I'm not so keen on getting a webcam just for its microphone, but thanks for the suggestion tongue.gif

I'll consider it, thanks!

I don't need a headset, I already have headphones and I just need a separate mic tongue.gif

And I got it precisely because so many people said it's great. It is possible that I got a dud, I'm just not willing to deal with the hassle of an RMA. I got it from Amazon, told them I wanted to return it as a defective item, and they were kind enough to tell me to just keep it and refunded me. So now I have the mic taking space on my desk, they wouldn't even let me send it back when I wanted to tongue.gif

You mean this? http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16826249028 -- the people leaving feedback are saying it doesn't come with the mic that's in the picture and the description tongue.gif I'm not really keen on paying extra for headphones I'm not going to use anyway (I already have nicer ones for my portable needs).

I have this Logitech one and have no complaints. Cheap too.
